These courses and events are hosted or facilitated by various education, agriculture and business development groups throughout the province. A list of approved courses can be found on the aforementioned website although it is not necessarily complete and other courses may be considered for approval. Any courses must increase a participant’s level of understanding and/or expertise in the following categories: business management, marketing, production techniques, communication or value-added production. “Producing food for the local market is a very entrepreneurial activity,” stated Joan Brady, Opportunities Co-ordinator and local food producer. She continued, “like many small business owners, local food producers are lifelong learners. I am glad we can support them as they build their businesses and in turn develop a local food system for Huron and Perth.” HPFTT has a fund set aside to support primarily tuition and registration costs, although other reasonable expenses may be considered. Funds are limited and will be awarded on a first-come- first-serve basis. Movement restrictions will be placed on the affected property. Further regulatory measures will be considered once survey work is completed for the year. Although the EAB does not pose a risk to human health, it is a highly destructive beetle that has already killed a large number of ash trees in Ontario and northeastern U.S., and it poses a major economic threat to urban and forested areas of North America. There have been numerous finds of this pest in Ontario and Quebec. The emerald ash borer can spread rapidly if moved by people. The key challenge in limiting the spread of this beetle is to prevent people from moving potentially infested ash materials, such as logs, branches, nursery stock, wood chips, and firewood of all species to non- infested areas. The public can play a key part in helping to control the spread of EAB by avoiding actions that would promote its spread. The CFIA continues to work with all levels of government towards slowing the spread of the EAB. Additional information is available on the CFIA website at www.inspection.gc.ca/pests or by calling 1-866-463-6017. Emerald ash borer found at Whalen Line in Perth
