“We came up against a hot pitcher
in our last game,” he said.
He said that overall the team
played well.
“We were happy with our 2-2
record,” he said.
“Saturday was a long day,” the
manager said.
Tournament host, the Blyth
Barons, played three games,
managing a single victory.
Coach Mike McDonald said they
were disappointed in the overall
result of the tournament, especially
with the way they played.
“We wanted to win the
championship,” he said. “We would
have done better if our bats were
alive.”
According to McDonald, the
Barons saw two good pitchers on
Saturday.
“We were not satisfied with the
way we played,” he said. “We would
have done better if we were better
with our bats.”
The Barons opened the tournament
with a 5-2 setback to Goderich.
McDonald connected for a home
run in the game. Dean Wheeler was
tagged with the loss.
Adam Cronin was the winning
pitcher in Blyth’s second game as
they edged Wroxeter 2-1.
McDonald, Devin Johnson and
Cronin each had a single in the game.
The Barons fell 7-4 to the
Fullarton As in eight innings in their
third game.
Wheeler was the losing pitcher.
Cronin had a double, while
McDonald, Dave Cook and Mike
Kerr each rapped out a single

Hitmen triumph at tourney
Congrats
The Wingham Hitmen
went through the entire
Huron County Fastball
League season
undefeated and
continued their winning
ways over the weekend
in Blyth for the league’s
year-end tournament,
beating the Walton
Brewers in the final

On the money
The Huron County Fastball League held its year-end
tournament in Blyth over the weekend with the Wingham
Hitmen taking the top prize. In this game, however, the Blyth
Barons beat the Wroxeter Rippers by a score of 2-1 with
Darcey Cook coming in to pitch, relieving starter Adam

Saugeen Maitland Lightning start season
The Saugeen Maitland Lightning
Midget AA team has started the
2010 – 11 season with five wins and
one loss. The Lightning began the
season participating in the Stoney
Creek Showcase, a prestigious
tournament with 40 of the best
Midget women’s teams from North
America as well as more than 15
university scouts and Mel Davidson,
coach of the Women’s National team
in attendance. The Lightning started
the tourney in dramatic fashion
winning their first three games
including wins against Markham-
Stouffville (5-1), Detroit Little
Caesars (3-0) and Pittsburg (3-1).
Entering the playoff round,
Saugeen faced off against the highly
ranked Toronto Aeros and came
away with a dramatic 2-1 victory
with Laura Irwin picking up the
shootout winner. In the next game
versus Bluewater, the Lightning
jumped out to a 2-0 lead but
Bluewater bounced back late in the
game with a couple of power-play
goals and an empty net goal to win
4-2.
Leading the Lightning in
tournament scoring was Marcie
Landman with six points follow by
Gina Murray with five. Also picking
up two goals were Irwin, Sara
Gossell, Brooklyn Irwin with
singles going to Hannah Davidson,
Abbey Gibson, Nicole Marriage and
Dollee Meigs.
Saugeen had stellar defensive play
by the Lightning defenceman and
rookie goalie, Stephanie Sluys who
ended the tournament with a 1.2
goals against average and save
percentage of .950.
In exhibition play, the Lightning
easily handled Waterloo with a 5-1
win. Scoring for Saugeen were Sara
Goessell, Irwin, Gina Murray, Laken
Smith and Brittany Butcher. Bantam
call-up, Hailey Duplantis picked up
the win in net.
This year’s roster consists of
