The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club had another busy week despite
the cold and wet weather.
The Club Championship was held
Sunday and Monday and the
conditions were anything but good,
but the gals and guys managed to
complete all four rounds. Trevor
Hopf and Linda Walker repeated as
champions with Peg Cameron and
Ed Daer winning the senior
championship. Gerry Edwards was
acknowledged as the super senior
champion.
The Tuesday senior men saw Bill
Johnston take low net honours while
Gerry Edwards finished second and
Brian Skinn third. Ed Daer shot a
39 to capture low gross.
Wednesday, Sept. 8, the club
hosted the John Mallick Senior
Memorial Tournament. The 65
golfers battled the rain and sub par
temperatures and posted some
pretty impressive scores. John’s
daughter Donna presented the
Mallick trophy to seventy-year-old
Wayne Pearen from Westmount
who fired a 75 to win the first
overall low gross. Listowel club
member Bob Greer’s 78 was low
gross for the 50-59 year olds while
Keith Baker also of Listowel won
the 60-69 division with a 76. Tom
Pegg from Lucknow, Ross Gibson
of Wingham and Don Farrish from
Oakville finished with low net for
their divisions. The seniors enjoyed
a steak barbecue afterwards in the
dining lounge as well as prizes for
everyone. Don Rae puts together
one of the best prize tables of any
tournament in the area.
The Thursday night men had 36
golfers out despite the cold
temperatures. John Dailleboust shot
a 40 for low net for the night. The
other winners were longest putt
Doug Rathwell and Dwight Leslie,
closest to the pin Doug Neil and
hidden scores Jay Marston, Steve
Nixon and Vern Logan.
On Saturday, the club hosted the
Brett Cameron Memorial
tournament. Around 60 family and
friends gathered at the course to
share some stories, many laughs and
some great memories of Brett. The
36 golfers enjoyed their round of
golf before getting together for a
barbecue chicken and steak supper.
The team of Jason Goodall, Jay
Marston, Murray Houghton and
Dan McPherson was presented with
the Brett Cameron Memorial
Trophy.
On Sunday, a group from the
Atwood Presbyterian Church had a
fantastic sunny day of golf followed
by a barbecue pork chop meal in the
golfers lounge. The group had a
great time and shared lots of good
shots and laughs.
On Sunday, Sept. 26, the club is
having its annual fall barbecue.
Tickets are available at the pro shop
or from any WGCC member.
