The Citizen, 2010-09-16, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 16, 2010.
Hallelujah! Sloan is here. A new
son came into the life of Curt, Julie
and Ella in Barrie last Wednesday,
Sept. 8. All those niggling worries
waiting the labour and delivery of a
new life can be put to rest. Now for
the parents the work really begins,
and as for the Grandma, it’s just
plain joy time.
Last Monday, the Armstrongs
hosted the Culture Club and
significant others at breakfast.
Leanne and Leona cooked up a
storm much to the delight of the
guests. Jim stayed out of the
kitchen. In any group of lively
folk, conversation is never dull and
so it came as a bit of a surprise to
note that it was lunch time
before it seemed time to go home. If
we’re not invited back we’ll know
why. A 1939 Brussels phone
book was quite entertaining to
peruse for familiar names. Please
note some of us weren’t even
born yet, so weren’t listed. For
the record I think our phone
number as I grew up was 36J. Old
issues of The Brussels Post and
the phone book kept the stories
rolling.
The changes that come with
September continue to roll out.
School is back in session and the
routines of fall take effect. Routine
is often a good thing.
It’s good to have Edna Pearson
back in the village. Her mobility
buggy is a nice thing to see
leaving Huronlea for the outside
world.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
Like anything, keeping things
fresh is the key to relevance and
attracting people’s interest, which is
what’s behind several moves by the
Brussels Agricultural Society for
this year’s Brussels Fall Fair.
Several new events have been
brought in for this year’s fair as well
as a new fundraising initiative
surrounding gift baskets and raffle
tickets.
Six gift baskets are currently at
The Citizen office in Brussels and
will be until they are moved to the
Brussels, Morris and Grey
Community Centre on Sept. 22.
Raffle tickets can be purchased for
$2 or three for $5 at The Citizen
office in preparation for the draw at
the fair.
Each basket has a theme, one is a
movie-lovers’basket, one is for bird-
lovers, another is for gardeners and
one is aimed at preparing the perfect
casserole. There is one aimed at
women called the pampering
package, that includes plenty of
items to pamper the body, while the
Thanksgiving basket comes along
just in time for the holiday.
Each basket is worth between
$150 and $200.
Sandy Allison took the lead on the
baskets after attending her first
meeting of the Agricultural Society
earlier this year. After retiring,
Allison worked at a gift basket
retailer for three years, so she
offered her services to the Brussels
Fall Fair.
While she’s new to Brussels,
Allison now knows that when you
volunteer in Brussels, it can be quitea commitment.“I offered to help tie ribbons onthe basket and by the next meeting, Iwas in charge of the project,” shesaid. As for new events, Mary Douma,
secretary of the Brussels
Agricultural Society, said there have
been several events added that
should appeal to fair-goers of all
ages.
She said the society is hoping to
add to last year’s successful dog
show by holding an even bigger dog
show this year.
She said there will also be a “Birds
of Prey” demonstration that will takeplace in the morning for the studentsand in the afternoon for everyone. There will also be a liveperformance by Juanita Wilkins, astand-out folk singer from the OwenSound Folk Festival.
There will also be some fowl on
display, something that hasn’t been
at the fair in years, Douma says.
Brussels-area resident Paul Nichol
will be bringing turkeys and roosters
to the fair.
Douma says there will also be a
reptile show this year, which is sure
to interest more than a few
people.
