Vincent acclaimed; Seili runs again
Thresher Reunion number 49
Blyth Campground welcomed the 49th annual Huron Pioneer Thresher and Hobby Association’s Reunion this past weekend.
Beautiful weather and unique opportunities brought participants and spectators from all over to see what antiques were on-site
to provide a glimpse into the past. Music, dancing, good food, presentations, demonstrations and agricultural competitions filled
the weekend. Video from the event is available on The Citizen’s website at www.northhuron.on.ca (Denny Scott photo)
With the nomination deadline just
passed, elections are fast
approaching for Huron County.
In North Huron, Reeve Neil
Vincent was unopposed and was
therefore acclaimed.
Blyth resident Bill Knott filed his
papers just before the deadline to
create a three-way race in Blyth
Ward among himself and
incumbents David Riach and Brock
Vodden.
Current Deputy Reeve Murray
Scott is retiring from council this
year, leaving incumbent James
Campbell to run against three
newcomers in East Wawanosh Ward;
Ray Hallahan, James Woodley and
James Snyder.
Wingham Ward will see a three-
way race among incumbents Alma
Conn and Archie MacGowan and
newcomer Bernie Bailey.
Morris-Turnberry may see a
changing of the guard with
councillor Paul Gowing running for
Mayor against incumbent Dorothy
Kelly.
Running for Morris Ward are
Jamie McCallum, Neil Warwick,
Edna McLellan and David Baker.
In the race for Turnberry Ward are
Ross (Lynn) Hoy, James (Jim)
Nelemans, William (Bill)
Thompson, John Smuck, Jason
Breckenridge and Jamie Heffer.
In Huron East, Mayor Joseph
(Joe) Seili is retiring from his
mayoral position, but will be
running for one of the two Brussels
ward councillor seats. Seili will be
running against incumbents David
Blaney and Frank Stretton.
Two hopefuls will be aiming for
Seili’s former position; current
Deputy Mayor Bernie MacLellan
and Paul Vander Molen.
Deputy Mayor will be fought over
by current Seaforth Ward councillor
Joe Steffler and Walton-resident and
TransCan founder Chris Lee.
Grey ward council seats, currently
held by Orval Bauer and Alvin
McLellan, will be sought after by the
two incumbents, as well as Dianne
Diehl and Dale Newman.
Incumbent councillors Andrew
Flowers and Bill Siemon were
acclaimed to the McKillop ward
seats.
Seaforth ward council seats will
be fought for by Maureen Agar,
Randy Dayman, Robert Dinsmore,
Nathan Marshall and incumbent Bob
Fisher.
Tuckersmith ward chairs will be
contested, with incumbents Les
Falconer and Larry McGrath
running against Raymond
Chartrand.
Ashfield-Colborne-Wawanosh
incumbent Reeve Ben Van
Diepenbeek has been acclaimed to
his role.
Wawanosh ward incumbent
councillors Neil Rintoul and
Doug Miller filed nomination
papers and were acclaimed to their
roles.
Incumbent Colborne ward
councillors Barry Millian and
Connie Black were acclaimed to
their seats.
With both current Ashfield
township councillors – Marilyn
Miltenburg and Carl Sloetjes –
stepping out of the race, Ashfield
will be a hotly contested race.
Six contenders have stepped
forward to attempt to take the
position – Roger Watt, Christopher
McLennan, Arden Eddie, Preston
Drennan, Murray Curran and
Thomas Brindley.
Miltenburg is retiring from
council while Sloetjes is moving to
Huron-Kinloss, where he will be
running for council.
Central Huron has no acclaimed
positions, with incumbent Reeve
Bert Dykstra running against
current West ward councillor Jim
Ginn.
Current deputy reeve John Bezaire
will be leaving his position to seek a
position in provincial politics. In his
absence, current East ward
councillor Pamlea Stanley will be
facing off against David Jewitt for
the Deputy Reeve position.
For the three positions in West
Ward, incumbents Allison Lobb and
Brian Barnim will be joined
by G. Bruce Hoist, Burkhard
Metzger and Dorothy Beuermann in
the race.
East ward will see only one of its
three councillors attempt to get re-
elected: Marg Anderson. Tim
Collyer will not be returning.
Ken Colquhoun, Danny
Colquhoun, Kaushik Patel, Alex
Westerhout, Conrad Kuiper, Gary
(Butch) Fleet and Jeff Stoll will be
running for the position.
With eyes already on the 50th
annual Huron Pioneer Thresher and
Hobby Association’s Reunion next
year, the 49th has just come to a
close.
The event was superior to last
year’s in almost all aspects,
according to Secretary of the
Association, Marian Hallahan.
“Gate admissions were up, we had
good attendance, and membership
sales were up too,” she said. “People
want to be a member so they can
capitalize on the early camping next
year.”
Hallahan said that camping
receipts were up this year, with 834
campers staying at the Blyth
Campgrounds.
Sale numbers at the dance, flea
market and vendors were roughly
the same, according to Hallahan, if
not slightly higher.
It was a great year for the event
with higher temperatures and lots of
sunshine, Hallahan said.
“The weather was good and the
atmosphere was awesome,” she said.
The only blemish on the weekend
was the early morning rain on
Sunday, which forced the tractor
pulls to be cancelled later that day.
“We had a very good weekend
despite that,” Hallahan said. “The
church service was great, it was
packed, and we had a good all-round
weekend.”
The campground welcomed
patrons from overseas, with visitors
coming from Ireland and Holland, as
well as across Canada and the
United States.
Competitions at the reunion
included bag tying and log sawing,
as there were no contenders for the
belt setting competition.
Richard Martin topped the
Saturday bag tying men’s
competition with 49 seconds, while
Donald Scott won on Sunday with a
time of 46 seconds.
The women’s competition saw
Jean Pentland tie fastest on Saturday
and Sunday, with times of 37
seconds and 35 seconds
respectively.
Lyle Hood and Bob Machan were
the fastest men’s sawing team on
Saturday with a time of nine
seconds. Shag Campbell and Jim
Sloan took Sunday’s fastest time at
11 seconds.
Jean Pentland and Marion Taylor
were the fastest ladies on Saturday
with a time of 20 seconds. On
Sunday, Heidi Brak and Jean
Pentland took top honours with a
time of 23 seconds.
The mixed group saw Campbell
and Pentland win on Saturday with a
time of 11 seconds, and saw Hood
and Pentland win on Sunday with
the same time.
