THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2010.‘Homegrown’ celebrates Festival’s history The Blyth Festival will be welcoming back many of their celebrated artists for a variety fundraiser entitled Homegrown. Billed as a one-night-only show that celebrates the last 35 years of arts in Blyth,Homegrown will feature several familiar faces from the Blyth Festival including Artistic Director Eric Coates, Michelle Fisk (Cruel Tears,Reverend Jonah), associate artistic director Gil Garrat, David Archambault and blues artist Raoul Bhaneja (Barndance Live!) The event will serve as a fundraiser for the Festival, and, with pieces from past productions being displayed, help remind people theFestival’s past.Coates explained that the eventwas inspired by the uniqueconnection that the Blyth Festivalcultivates with its audience. “There is such a sense of ownership of the Blyth audience,” Coates said. “People feel connections with the shows and that doesn’t really happen at a modern theatre.” The challenge with this event, according to Coates, has been finding pieces that are indicative of the Festival’s works that artists are available to participate in. “It’s really been a matter of finding who we can and that has lead to a lot of the work being musical,” he said. “Musicians are very willing to pack up and show up and share their talent and time.” Coates said that this is a serendipitous turn of events because the show allows him the pleasure of letting people know what the artists they are used to seeing are capable of. “It is a real pleasure for me to show the other side of artists, and what they can do,” Coates said. “Michelle Fisk will be singing songs from Cruel Tears, for example, which is a treat because the audience doesn’t get to see her sing.” Coates said that other artists who will be showing their musical talents will include husband-and-wife duo Garrat and Cappy Onn, along with Archambault, co-writer of The Perilous Pirates Daughter.Ted Johns, who has been an actorand playwright at the Blyth Festivalfor years, will be providing newcontent for the fundraiser. Johns will be taking to the stage with a new piece called Bill Gomserall. A monologue, the piece is part of four stories that Johns wrote while staying in Saskatchewan. “Me and [my wife Janet Amos] lived in Saskatchewan, in Regina for two or three years,” Johns explains. “I divided the map of Saskatchewan into quarters and went and camped and stayed in each of them and wrote The Regina Monologues.” The Regina Monologues is four different stories about historical or noteworthy characters that are connected to the area in which Johns stayed.
