By Pastor Brent KipferBrussels Mennonite FellowshipWhat is your family’s mission?
In the movie,The Incredibles,a
superhero named Frozone and his
wife are getting ready for a dinner
date. Frozone shifts gears as he
realizes that their city is under attack
by a destructive robot. He calls to his
wife, “Honey! Where is my super
suit?”
“What?” his wife answers.
“Where is my super suit?!”
Frozone repeats as a helicopter
crashes down behind him.
“I? Uh? Put it away,” his wife calls
back. “Why do you need to know?”
“I need it!” Frozone answers,
beginning to frantically search the
room.
“Uh uh,” his wife chides, “Don’t
you think about runnin’ off to do no
derring-do. We’ve been planning this
dinner for two months.”
“But the public is in danger!”
“My evening is in danger,” his
wife responds.
Unable to stand it any longer,
Frozone bursts out: “You tell me
where my suit is, woman! We are
talking about the greater good.”
“Greater good?” she replies. “I am
your wife. I’m the greatest good you
are ever gonna get!”What should get the priority? Arelaxing candlelight dinner in a nice
restaurant – or saving their city?
What is the core mission of a
family? Who is right?
Both! Frozone and his wife each
understand part of it. His wife
understands the inner mission of the
family. Frozone knows the outer
mission.
God has given every family an
incredible mission to carry out in
this world – and it includes both an
inner and an outer dimension. Both
are essential.
You can see it in the promise that
God made to Abram so many years
ago. Genesis 12 describes how God
called Abram and Sarai to go to a
new land, where their family would
grow and become a great nation.
Although they are well past child-
bearing years, God makes a promise
to this elderly childless couple that
has at least two dimensions. First,
the Lord wants to bless them. This
connects to their inner mission, what
happens within the family. Second,
God wants to bless others through
them, so he says, “All peoples on
earth will be blessed through you.”
Our mission reaches beyond us to
touch the world. That is our outermission. This has been God’s plan for
families from the beginning.
Throughout the Scriptures you can
see the inner mission of the family
lived out where:
• Family members protect each
other, as Miriam did for her baby
brother Moses.
• Family members help each other
find their identity, as Jacob affirmed
his son Judah’s gift of leadership.
• Husbands and wives express love
and devotion to each other, like
Solomon and his wife in the Song of
Songs.
• Family members pass on faith in
Jesus, as Eunice and Lois did for
their son and grandson, Timothy.
• Family members teach work
skills, like Joseph taught carpentry
to Jesus.
We live out much of our family
mission around the dinner table,
giving help with math homework,
coaching children through a conflict,
playing Scrabble or going for a walk
together. With God in charge of our
family life, this mission can be a
great blessing. Here, we can taste the
grace, peace and joy of the kingdom
of God, learn how to build
relationships, give and receive loveand gain strength for our work in theworld.
This inner mission of the family is
crucial, but it is not enough. God
has created us for a larger purpose –
to reach beyond ourselves to bless
others. In the Bible, you can see it
in:
• Abram and Sarai, who gave
hospitality to three strangers that
showed up on their doorstep.
• The wide variety of work that
God’s people do – from Tubal-
Cain working in bronze and iron,
to David’s shepherd work, to
Lydia’s fabric dying, to Paul’s tent-
making.
• Esther, who stands up for what is
right before the king of Persia with
the encouragement of her cousin
Mordecai.
• Disciples who go far from home
to tell others the good news of Jesus.
How does your family live out the
mission that God has given to you?God promises: I will bless you...and you will be a blessing.
At the Avon Maitland District
School Board meeting on August
30, the board was advised of
Education Director Chuck Reid's
intention to retire after more than 30
years serving public education.
He also decided that he would
step down as the Director effective
immediately.
Chair Jenny Versteeg said, “We
are grateful to Chuck Reid for his
service to our board and we wish
him all the best in his retirement.”
Trustees will now begin the
process to find and appoint a new
Director of Education.
During this process
Superintendent of Education Ted
Doherty has been appointed interim
director.
