The Blyth Festival presents Jake’s
Gift by Julia Mackey – a multi
award-winning Canadian play about
a World War II veteran’s journey
back to Juno Beach for the 60th
anniversary of D-Day.
During the play, cantankerous Jake
meets Isabelle, a precocious 10-year-
old-girl from the local village, whose
inquisitive nature and charm
challenge the old veteran to confront
some long-ignored ghosts.
Jake’s Gift was created after writer
and performer Julia Mackey
travelled to Normandy, France in
June 2004 for the 60th Anniversary
Ceremonies of D-Day. She spent
eight days touring the Normandy
coast, attending many of the
ceremonies and interviewing
Canadian, British and American
veterans, as well as local people.
Jake’s Gift will take place on
Monday, Sept. 27 at 8 p.m. at Blyth
Memorial Hall. Tickets are $25,
available at www.blythfestival.com
or by calling 1-877-862-5984. The
Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 420,
Blyth and the Legion Ladies
Auxiliary to Branch 420 are offering
a country supper for $15 in the
Lower Hall at 6 p.m.
A special matinee will also be held
on Sept. 27 at 1 p.m. for school
groups.
This Theatre-for-Young-Audience
presentation is part of the Blyth
Festival ongoing commitment to
providing opportunities for area
youth to participate in the arts
locally.

The Stratford Shakespeare
Festival announced last week that
the Tom Patterson Theatre’s 2010
season will be extended by one week
to October 3. Demand for tickets for
all three productions at the theatre
has been extremely strong.
“I’m delighted that these three
productions have proven such a hit
with our audiences. Jacques Brel
was a true poet for our times, and
our success with the show that bears
his name – so brilliantly directed by
Stafford Arima, a newcomer to the
Festival – proves once again that
poetry belongs on stage,” says
Artistic Director Des McAnuff.
“For the Pleasure of Seeing Her
Again, beautifully staged by another
Festival newcomer, Chris Abraham,
deepens our already warm and long-
standing relationship with Michel
Tremblay, arguably Canada’s
leading playwright. Finally, it has
been such a pleasure to welcome
back Marti Maraden, who has given
us in The Winter’s Tale a
tremendously sensitive and
entertaining production of one of
Shakespeare’s most moving plays.”
For the Pleasure of Seeing Her
Again will have two additional
performances at 2 p.m. on Sept. 28;
and 8 p.m. on Oct. 2.
Jacques Brel Is Alive and Well and
Living in Paris will also have two
additional performances at 8 p.m. on
Oct. 1 and 2 p.m. on Oct. 3.
The Winter’s Tale will have one
additional performance at 2 p.m. on
Sept. 29.
Last week the Festival announced
an encore performance of The
Tempest, featuring Christopher
Plummer as Prospero. Scheduled for
2 p.m. on September 13, it will raise
funds for the Festival’s New Play
Development activities.
Six other shows have already been
extended this season:Kiss Me, Kate,
Evita, Peter Pan, Do Not Go Gentle,
The Two Gentlemen of Verona and
King of Thieves.
