The 2009/2010 season was a
banner year for the Blyth Festival
Singers. In December, they held
their usual Christmas Concert in
Goderich with the Beard Family.
The following May, a gala dinner
and cabaret entitled “Hot Jazz, Cool
Licks” took place in Varna with
special guests, “The Howlin’ Dog
Vintage Jazz Band”.
The focus for the season in 2010,
however, was the 50-plus choir
members recording a CD under the
professional direction of director,
Robert Blackwell. Five months of
rehearsals and two recording
sessions resulted in a CD entitled
Blyth Festival Singers in Concert –
A Celebration of 30 Years of Song.
The production also features
soprano Rachel Mallen, tenor Casey
Van Bakel, flautist Jan Searle and
cellist Ben Bolt-Martin.
Recorded in the amazing acoustic
space of Stratford United Church
with recording engineer Glen
Teeple of The Music Room, this
album comes fully-loaded with
choir and audience favourites and is
sure to delight folks with a variety
of musical tastes. The singers were
fortunate to have the financial
support of the Ontario Arts Council
which funded their 2009/2010
season so they could embark on this
ambitious project.
The launch date for the CD is
Sept. 11 at the Blyth Festival’s
Homegrown cabaret which features
a unique combination of former
Blyth artists, never before
appearing together on the Blyth
Festival stage.
The Blyth Festival Singers will be
performing a number of songs from
their new album, which will be on
sale at the event. Copies of the CD
will also be available for purchase at
all the Singers’ performances this
year, as well as through the Blyth
Festival Theatre.
