ACW residents protest proposed gravel pit Auburn Car show raises $1,700 Let’s get going It wasn’t all about big and strong engines at the August 21 bike and car show in Auburn to support the Auburn Playground Committee. The little vehicles got some attention too. Emma Kerr, left, and Sara Moss were all set to go in their pink car. (Vicky Bremner photo) It was a full house at an Ashfield- Colborne-Wawanosh Township Council meeting held on August 17 as councillors deliberated the future of Lots 16 and 17 of the Maitland Concession of Colborne Ward, better known as 80897 Sharpe’s Creek Line. The property, which is between Holmesville and Londesboro Line, is owned by Jennison Construction Limited, and, for the second time in the last decade, is the proposed site of a gravel pit. Council was addressed by the Huron County Planning Department, Jennison’s representa- tives, and the representatives of the land owners of the local area. Huron County planner Monica Walker-Bolton, stated that there was no definite suggestion from the county and that she would hold her comments until after council had heard all sides of the story and set a date for a follow-up meeting to accept or decline the proposed amendments. Currently, the lands are designated Agricultural with a holding pattern (AG1-H) and Natural Environment (NE1 and NE5). The amendments would see those designations changed to Extractive Resources and Extractive Resources Zone- Special Zones (ER1-3), which would allow Jennison to remove aggregate that had been found under the land. The cottage owners who live downhill from the proposed gravel pit, however, disagreed with the amendment, stating that they are in a unique position as far as drinking In the grand scheme of things, change is inevitable.
