ACW residents protest
proposed gravel pit
Auburn Car show raises $1,700
Let’s get going
It wasn’t all about big and strong engines at the August 21 bike and car show in Auburn to
support the Auburn Playground Committee. The little vehicles got some attention too. Emma
Kerr, left, and Sara Moss were all set to go in their pink car. (Vicky Bremner photo)
It was a full house at an Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh Township
Council meeting held on August 17
as councillors deliberated the future
of Lots 16 and 17 of the Maitland
Concession of Colborne Ward, better
known as 80897 Sharpe’s Creek
Line.
The property, which is between
Holmesville and Londesboro Line,
is owned by Jennison Construction
Limited, and, for the second time in
the last decade, is the proposed site
of a gravel pit.
Council was addressed by
the Huron County Planning
Department, Jennison’s representa-
tives, and the representatives of the
land owners of the local area.
Huron County planner Monica
Walker-Bolton, stated that there was
no definite suggestion from the
county and that she would hold her
comments until after council had
heard all sides of the story and
set a date for a follow-up meeting
to accept or decline the
proposed amendments.
Currently, the lands are designated
Agricultural with a holding pattern
(AG1-H) and Natural Environment
(NE1 and NE5). The amendments
would see those designations
changed to Extractive Resources
and Extractive Resources Zone-
Special Zones (ER1-3), which
would allow Jennison to remove
aggregate that had been found under
the land.
The cottage owners who live
downhill from the proposed gravel
pit, however, disagreed with the
amendment, stating that they are in a
unique position as far as drinking
In the grand scheme of things,
change is inevitable. Last week The
Citizen said goodbye to Kerri
Heroux, former Auburncorrespondent. All the best to her.The final numbers are in fromAuburn’s first annual car and bikeshow held on Saturday,Aug. 21. The
Playground Committee was pleased
to announce that all of the events
brought in a grand total of $1,700.
Many thanks go out to all of the
sponsors, volunteers and
participants. The Playground
Committee would like everyone to
know that there are many future
events in the works, so stay tuned!
The Huron County Early Years
playgroup that once attended theHuron Missionary Chapel onMonday mornings was cancelledthis past spring due to lack ofattendance. Many parents had gone
back to work and just weren’t able to
make it out on Monday mornings.
For those looking for a local
playgroup this fall, there is an Early
Years playgroup in Londesborough
at the United Church on Thursday
mornings or in Blyth at the arena on
Tuesday mornings. Both programs
run from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m.
T.H.E. Bus, which is run through
Rural Response for HealthyChildren, does still come to theHuron Missionary Chapel onalternate Tuesdays from 10:30 a.m.to 11:30 a.m.
Residents on the municipal well at
the Auburn Hall may have noticed
someone doing locates in recent
days. There have been issues with
the distribution system and Central
Huron will be replacing the water
mains this fall. The Utilities
Department has advised that most of
the work will be done with
trenchless technology to install the
new lines. There will be
correspondence issued relating the
details of the work closer to the start
of the project.
With former Auburn
correspondent Kerri Heroux heading
off to pursue post-secondary
education, 11-year Auburn resident
Koreen Moss will be taking over the
Auburn News column.
Koreen and her husband Kevin
have three busy children ages six, 10
and 14.
Most will remember her from the
Neighbourhood Watch initiative that
took place in the village last fall and
her work with the Auburn
Playground Committee as the
committee’s secretary.
Please feel free to contact her with
any news items or upcoming events
in the village.
