THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 2, 2010.Sports Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn The Wingham Golf and Curling Club wrapped up the month of August on a busy note and are looking forward to a big September. The Tuesday ladies saw Debbie Currie shoot well below her handicap on her way to capturing both the Wilma Kerr trophy and the Con Ron award. The competition was for ladies over 50 years of age and handicap above 36. Debbie’s game has really improved and it was great to see her rewarded for her good play. The Wednesday seniors had to play on Tuesday last week because of Bull Day on Wednesday but still managed a pretty good turnout. The 18 golfers enjoyed a beautiful morning with Lloyd Lamont winning low net followed by Doug Neil and Ed Daer. Daer also shot a 38 for low gross for the morning and Grant Currie won the longest putt award. On Wednesday the club welcomed many golfers to the club on the animal CKNX Bull Day. The rain managed to hold off, making it a super day for both the golfers and the club. The Thursday night men again had superb numbers as 57 golfers hit the links. The winners were: closest to the pin, Gerry Edwards and Aart DeVos; longest putt, Doug Vanderwould and “Mr. Softball” John McTavish; hidden scores, Ed Collison, Gerald Coghlin and Pete Inglis and most honest golfer Joe O’Rourke. Mark Foxton shot a great round of 37 for low gross honours. On Friday, Aug. 27, the club hosted a group from the Belgrave Co-op. The golfers enjoyed nine holes of golf followed by lunch in the dining lounge. On Friday night, long-time member Dan Campbell had a hole-in-one on the very tough par three second hole with a four iron. Congratulations Dan! On Saturday, the club hosted the annual lefty/righty Ryder cup tournament. The righties with a “rent-a-lefty”T.P. Powell came away victorious to pick up the trophy. The lefties are already looking for revenge in 2011. Next Wednesday, Sept. 8, the club is hosting the John Mallick Memorial senior tournament. There are still a few spots available. Anyone interested please call the pro shop as soon as possible. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS It is sure great to see some familiar faces coming back to Wingham for a round of golf, Bruce Lott, Don Gurney, Ken Taylor, Mac McLeod, Paul Fluery, Doug Ewing and John McTavish just to name a few. It sure brings back some great memories for many of our members. REPRINTS OF PHOTOS taken by Citizen photographers are available to purchase.
