PAGE 7.A Turnberry Ward landownerstrongly disagreed with hisassessment when court of revision was held for the Baird Municipal Drain during the Aug. 24 meeting of Morris-Turnberry council. Don Eadie said he felt his property was getting no benefit from the drain. The only surface water on his property came from the nearby township road and the drain was not going to alleviate that problem, he told council. The area through whichthe drain passes is gravelly so hewould not hook in any field tile tothe drain. What’s more, he said, experienceshowed that disturbing the soil for the drain would mean crop losses that would last for up to 10 years. Property owners are only compensated for crop losses for one to two years, depending on the construction process employed. Eadie also said he planned to develop the hill as a gravel pit and the presence of the drain wouldreduce the amount of gravel thatcould be extracted, costing himpotential revenue. But the drain’s engineer, JeremyTaylor of R. J. Burnside and Associates Limited, defended the process he used to come up with the assessment of costs. The court of revision, which included all councillors but Lynn Hoy, (and Mark Beaven who was absent), denied the appeal, explaining that regulations don’t allow the court to change the technical aspects of the report. Eadie was informed he couldappeal the decision to the provincialDrainage Tribunal which does havethe power to overturn assessments.Following the court of revision, council voted to accept the tender of A. G. Hayter Contracting to construct the drain at a cost of $25,684.90 including HST. However, construction can’t commence until council passes the bylaw for the drain. The bylaw cannot be passed until the appeal period is over. If a landowner appeals to the Drainage Tribunal, the bylaw cannot be passed until the appeal is heard and decided. By Ellen Jefferson Wawanosh 4-H members met on Aug. 19 at 8 p.m. at the Jefferson home for two meetings. To wake the members up, junior leader, Reba Jefferson led the club in some yoga. President Jolande Oudshoorn opened the meeting with the pledge and roll call where members shared ideas for a quick breakfast. Most answered granola bars or fruit. Members learned that it is important to get breakfast, no matter how little time you have. Granola bars are an easy thing to grab so the club decided to take a closer look. The club divided into groups and compared their nutrition labels. Each group shared their findings and learned that it is important to read the label. Granola bars can be high in sodium and sugar. The club needed a name and decided to call themselves the Breakfast Bunch. Maisy Jefferson offered to design the title page. The next meeting was all about eggs. Members shared how they liked their eggs, which mostly was scrambled. One egg contains 14 essential nutrients and 6 grams of protein, making eggs a great option for breakfast. Members divided into groups to create skits and songs to teach the rest of the club about egg nutrition, ways to cook eggs and reading the nutrition label. Members headed inside to get to work in the kitchen. They made bran muffins and two different quiches. Then the group tried some “Grab n’ Go” recipes including smoothies, banana sandwiches, egg wraps and fruit and yogurt. Junior leaders, Reba and Maisy Jefferson, led the club in a game of “Family Food” while everything was in the oven. When it was ready, they sat down to enjoy the food. Members tried a bit of everything and were welcome to have more. The next meeting is Aug. 26 at 8 a.m. at the Jeffersons.
