Did you ever see a heron in a tree?
We were having a lovely evening
paddle on the connecting river
between Rock and Whitefish Lake
in Algonquin Park when we saw
what looked like a wasp nest and
was hooked to a dead tree.
Marvelling at that sight, the thing
started to move and lo’and behold a
great blue heron stood on a branch
waking from a little nap. We didn’t
interfere with its life at all, as it was
still there when we paddled by later
that evening.
School preparations are happening
in earnest this week, as the
countdown continues. Last-minute
details of equipment needed and
things yet to be done are all on the
checklist. September is ready to roll.
There is a baking marathon
happening as I write this. Jordan and
Robyn are having the last holiday of
the summer and there are lots of neat
things that must get done this week.
Frank and Kathy Workman have
just returned from spending with
Sheila Richards at her summer home
in Quebec. It was a special time as
Peter was able to arrange time off
from Nunavut to join the holiday.
Sadness is all about as the Bray
and Pletch families and all their
connections try to handle the sudden
deaths of Larry and David this past
week. Words can never convey the
feelings of loss and sadness that
overtakes us when death comes.
Helplessness is not a feeling we like
and it seems worse when there’s
nothing to do to help the people in
the family. Janis and Melanie you
have our thoughts and prayers as
you get through the days ahead.
It’s time to be thinking about your
entries for the Brussels Fall Fair, it
will be here very soon.
Enjoy these days of summer.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

At the BranchYouth and Bursary chairs meet in BrusselsBy Jo-Ann McDonaldThe Brussels Legion Branch 128was the host venue for a zonemeeting for the Youth and Bursary
Chairmen of the 13 branches in our
zone. There were 10 out of the 13
Branches in attendance. The Branch
was represented by President John
Lowe in both capacities. Comrade
John is Zone Youth Chairman and
conducted the Youth portion of the
evening in the absence of the
District Youth Chairman Crystal
Taylor. A reminder that an education
bursary is available for children and
grandchildren of veterans and
details and application forms are
available at the Branch. The Branch was happy to have thespecial 55th wedding anniversary ofGeorge and Shirley Wheeler
celebrated on Saturday. George and
Shirley welcomed many Brussels
and area friends to an afternoon of
light lunch and refreshments and a
chance to wish them anniversary
wishes. The Wheelers were joined
by nearly 100 family, friends and
neighbours for a dinner and evening
of reflections and a trip down
memory lane for all. George and
Shirley were pleased to have
daughter Carol and husband Simon
and son Kevin with wife Michelle
and son Kurtis on hand to make theirspecial day wonderful. The catering crew of Jo-AnnMcDonald, John Lowe, Judy Lee,
Allyson Cardiff, Rick McDonald,
Chris Brown and Mary Bradshaw
did a great job for the day.
There are less than 10 days left to
get your elimination draw ticket
before the early-bird draw. Stop in at
the Branch or call a Legion member.
A moment in history for your
memory and information. It was on
September 1, 1939 when WWII
began with German forces sweeping
into Poland with the power of the
“Lightning War”, better known asthe Blitzkrieg. The early-bird membershipprogram starts in September. We
encourage all members to renew
their membership early and if
possible bring a friend. We need to
boost the membership of the Branch
and family and friends are welcome
to join. You do not need a veteran
relationship to become a member, so
drop in and pick up an application
form.
Thank You
Brussels and surrounding area
for all your kind donations at the
second Wayne Lowe Memorial
Charity Barbeque. All money
raised will be donated to the
Brussels Optimists to help offset
the cost of the reconstruction of
the Ball Park. Thank you to
Brussels Agri Services,
Dauphin’s Country Store, Steve
Rathwell Sand and Gravel for
their kind donations. We also
would like to thank the Brussels
Tigers and Optimists for the
Memory Tree planted in
Wayne’s honour. The inscription
on the plaque reads “This tree is
dedicated to the memory of
Wayne Lowe, tireless volunteer,
fan, player and friend of the
Brussels Ball Park.” Wayne
would be so proud of your
accomplishments.
Thank you once again,
Wayne’s family.
