The village is much quieter this
week without the roar of motocross,
but people have been busy. The hot
weather has many farmers taking
third-cut hay and checking out the
soybean crops for any bugs and or
mold. The white beans are beginning
to turn with all the sunshine and
crop specialists report that the crops
are ahead of schedule mostly. Let’s
hope the fall is as great as the
summer has been.
The only Friday the 13th this year
was celebrated with the annual
motorcycle gathering at Port Dover.
There were about 30 area folks
including Paul, Cheryl and Curtis
Ryan attending the 50th gathering of
the event. They headed down on
Thursday and camped and enjoyed
the special festivities and meeting up
with folks they have met over the
years.
’Tis the time of year for showers
and a shower was held for the bride-
to-be of Tanner Leslie, Lonnie Horst
at the Brodhagen Hall. Mother of the
groom, Patty Banks looked lovely to
meet the many friends, relatives and
neighbours of the area who attended.
The very funny creation of wedding
dresses from toilet paper entertained
the group and the bride received
many lovely gifts. The bride is the
daughter of Richard and Marjorie
Horst.
A shower was held for Carali
McCall at Cavan United Church,
Winthrop. Carali is the daughter of
Murray and Sherry McCall and was
home from England for a quick visit
before her wedding in September.
The shower was well attended and
an amusing video presentation by
Marion Hunt as well as step dancing,
clogging, piano and singing
numbers were performed.
Our condolences are expressed to
Joe McClelland and son Mark on the
loss of wife and mother, Sheila
(Bignell) McClelland. Joe and
Sheila lived many years on the
Jamestown Road and moved to
Walton about four years ago. They
celebrated their 40th wedding
anniversary in July with a party for
their family, friends and neighbours.
Our sympathies to all.
Summer is holiday time and
returning from a four-day shopping
trip to Grove City, Pennsylvania was
Lily Fincham. The Great Canadian
bus tour featured tours of the area
sights, a stay at the Hampton Inn and
shopping at the Mill Creek Mall.
Lily reports that most everything
was on sale and there is no tax on
clothes so she accomplished most of
her birthday and Christmas
shopping.
Returning from the west are
Clarence and Rosemarie Bishop
where they visited with their
granddaughter Kayla. Kayla has
been working at Werner Bros.
Riding Stables at Banff doing
carriage rides and more. They were
away a week and crammed in a sidetrip to the Okanogan Valley, the IceFields and Vernon B.C. They wenton a three-hour trail ride in a wagoninto the mountains and saw lots ofwildlife including mountain elk,
sheep, goats and bears. They also
had a chance to visit with a past 4-H
exchange student, Ian Marshall. It
was a full week with lots to see and
do and they returned a tired pair.
Welcome home!
Margery Huether has returned
from a four-day trip to P.E.I. She was
visiting with friends she had met in
Florida. She was in the area of the
Anne of Green Gables home and
enjoyed the sights and her visit.
Making the trip to the East Coast
were Steve and Marni Knight. They
headed out to visit with Steve’s sister
Joanne and Weldon, Andrew and
Allison. They live at St. John, New
Brunswick and Steve and Marni
spent a lot of time catching up with
the kids, while the parents were
away at work. They went to Fundy
National Park and walked the trails,
went kayaking on the lake and
enjoyed the beautiful sights. The St.
John port is always popular when
cruise ships pull in and there is a
market and many buskers around. A
very popular busker is the “Granite
Man”. He looks like a stone statue
and stands for hours never moving
and many cannot believe he is alive.
Unfortunately, there was no ship this
day and they missed the
performance but instead they ran
into the Gay Pride Parade and the
many uniquely dressed participants.
They had a great time with the Black
family and for your information, it is
an 18-hour drive to St. John, New
Brunswick.
We are pleased to report that Edna
(Ralph) Pearson is now a resident of
Huronlea and is very happy to be
among her many friends of the
Brussels area.
The coffee group of J.R.s was
surprised and treated to coffee and
cake in celebration of George
Cousin’s birthday. It was a special
birthday for George but you will
have to ask George how special.
The ladies coffee group gathered
for cake to celebrate August
birthdays as well last week.
Celebrating in August are Marg
Work, Mary Huether, Leona
McDonald, Fran Bremner and Nora
Stephenson. Happy birthday ladies.
A dual celebration for Clyde
McClure and wife Cathy McClure
was held at their home. The combo
number of 110 years young for the
two of them was celebrated. When
you add 60 and 50 you get 110, you
can decide which one is which. They
had many family and friends join
them in their celebration and happy
birthday to both.
Congratulations to Brian and
Sheila Prescott on celebrating their
50th wedding anniversary this past
weekend at the Brussels Legion.
They had a wonderful crowd of folks
drop in to wish them well in the
afternoon and enjoyed a family and
friend dinner in the evening.
Congrats to them.
Family reunions are always fun
and the Newman reunion was no
exception. Marilyn (Newman)
McDonald and her family, Jim,
Bruce,Cathy,Heather,Pat and
Jeanne and their families gathered at
the Shall-Be-Inn near Hensall for a
wonderful afternoon with over 60
members of the Newman family.
The Stevens family reunion was
held at the Seaforth Lion’s Park with
26 family members attending. Leona
(Stevens) McDonald was surprised
when the gathering also celebrated
her 80th birthday with cake and
gifts. Rick and family, daughter
Karin attended along with Leona’s
sister Marg Rogerson, and manyextended family members. The Wayne Lowe AnnualBarbecue was a great success lastweek at Murray Lowe’s Barbershop. The many members of the extended
family were on hand to man the
barbecues and a donation jar
garnered nearly $1,800 for the fight
against cancer. Great job folks.
Chris and Judy Lee had a good
and bad experience on the weekend.
They were lucky to have tickets to
the Toronto Argonauts’ game on
Friday evening. They headed to
Toronto in the afternoon and had the
horrible experience of getting caught
in a traffic jam that had them sitting
on the road for five hours, moving
inches at a time. They arrived at the
hotel, well after the start time of the
game, checked and found the game
was at half time and managed to get
to the stadium to see the last half of
the game. Good luck to have tickets,
bad luck to have the traffic jam and
good luck to see the Hamilton Ti-
cats defeat the Argos.
Celebrating a special birthday was
Kathleen Semple. Kathleen’s family
celebrated her 80th birthday with a
family gathering of about 25 folks at
Kathleen’s home with a social
afternoon and meal. Kathleen’s
children are Calvin, Janis, Robina
and Kevin (who was unable to
attend). Congrats to Kathleen!
A good turnout of family, friends
and neighbours were on hand for the
barbecue buck and doe for our
daughter Kelly McDonald andfiancé Adam Jarosz. It was held atthe farm of Scott and AliciaMcDonald and folks enjoyed abarbecued pig, corn roast and anarray of salads and desserts. A silent
auction was held and a wonderful
evening was enjoyed.
Family and friends gathered for a
surprise party for Terri Gulutzen to
celebrate her 40th birthday, hosted
by her husband and children. She
was surprised when friends started
to arrive in the afternoon and the
party was on. Socializing and a
potluck meal was enjoyed by all.
Congratulations to Al and Rebecca
DeVos on the birth of a daughter
Hayden Sophia last week. Gary and
Heather Dauphin are the proud
grandparents of grandchild number
six.
Duff’s United Church in Walton
held its Sunday service at the farm of
Lorne and Bonnie Glanville on
Sunday. The weather held for the
good crowd of near 40 to enjoy the
beautiful garden setting of the
service. Special music was provided
by members of Duff’s including
Gloria Wilbee, Marie McGavin,
Marion Godkin, Pearl McCallum
and Phyllis Mitchell. Following the
service a wonderful potluck meal
was enjoyed by all.
