had a variety of activities keeping
everyone busy this weekend. On
Saturday there were cards, a banquet
and a fish fry to stretch the help to
cover.
Congratulations to Brian and
Sheila Prescott on celebrating their
50th wedding anniversary at the
Branch. They had many friends drop
into the Branch for a visit and a light
snack of anniversary cake and
squares. They enjoyed a roast beef
dinner with nearly 70 of their family
and friends and a wonderful array of
entertainment was provided for all
by their very talented family
members. Congratulations Brian and
Sheila.
The kitchen staff was organized by
Jo-Ann McDonald and carried out
by Jean Bridge and Mary Bradshaw
for the afternoon, while the dinner
was in the hands of John Lowe, Ruth
Lowe, Cecil Moore, Wanda Walker,
Nanci Ducharme, Nicole Noble and
youth helpers Kristen Pipe and
Megan Henry. Good job everyone.
The card party had eight tables of
players hoping to be winners. The
first-place team of Bev Hayden and
Mary McIntosh, had a great day
winning six lone hands to bump their
score to 82 points and the top prize.
The second-place team of Viola
Adams and Ruth had 66 points and
the third-place team was Ruth and
Alma with 65 points. The low
players of the day were Betty Hulley
and Frank scoring only 43 points for
the afternoon play. The lone-hand
prizes went to Stuart Chamney and
Deanna Bacon. Euchre is every twoweeks with Marg Bennett.
The fish fry crew was off to the
Seaforth Branch for the afternoon.
The crew fed over 225 folks.
Heading up the crew was Glenn
Bridge with Bob and Monica
Richardson, Mabel Glanville,
Sharon Robbins, Deb Cann and Eric
Ross. Good job folks.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of over 90 enjoy the
music of the Country Versatiles. The
regular staff of Howard and Audrey
Hackwell, Judy Lee, Mabel
Glanville and Jo-Ann McDonald
looked after the dance.
Our get-well wishes go to our
President John Lowe who has
suffered a shoulder injury. We hope
he has a speedy recovery.
Elimination draw tickets still need
to be picked up by members. Only
two weeks to the early-bird draw.
Darn, it’s starting to smell like fall.
Okay, so I can’t describe what
autumn smells like, but it happens.
Your nose one day picks up the wave
of odour and your mind crashes with
the idea that summer is over.
Anytime in the last half of August it
can be smelled and then things start
to subtly change. Parents become
aware of bedtime, commercials for
school supplies are seen, last trips of
summer are organized and the
children start talking about school.
All this, to really let you know that
the hazy days of summer are nearly
gone.
Family reunions are one of the
great things about summer. Ralph’s
Mom Alma and her sister Gene
married the Watson brothers Reg
and Carson a few years ago.
Six boys and Mary were soon part of
the landscape.
Their “growing up” years were
spent together with the added
supervision of Will and Bessie and
Clarence and Marie McCutcheon
and the sixth of Morris where the
farms all clustered. Bert, Jim, Ralph,
Joe, John and Mary were able to
gather with the families at one of the
old home farms where Mike and Val
Watson now live. Clarence and
Marie popped in to see the clan for a
little catch-up time, seeing if those
wild boys ever really grew up. The
city folks enjoyed the cattle, llamas,
ducks and goats as well as the clean
country air. A group photo with the
’50 Ferguson tractor put a smile on
Alma’s face as they actually gave
her the steering wheel. Memories
were all about and readily shared.
The skills of summer are always
obvious by this time of year. The
footwork of soccer, the throwing
arm of baseball and the balance of
bikes have all been improved with
practice. The look of pride on the
child’s face when a move is well
executed is such a joy to watch.
The summer days are going fast so
be sure to get your wishes out there.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
