Country Classic starts today
The Economical Insurance Group
Seaforth Country Classic will kick
off today, August 19, with golfers
from across the world hoping to
prove their mettle.
Preceded by a qualifier earlier this
week in Seaforth, the classic will
feature 156 golfers from 23 different
countries, including Japan, Korea,
Mexico, and Scotland.
“It’s quite an extensive field,” says
Carolanne Doig of the Seaforth Golf
and Country Club.
The golfers will be competing for
the prestige of the win, as well as a
$150,000 purse.
The tournament will wrap up on
Sunday at 5 p.m. with awards going
to the top golfers, and a presentation
of the proceeds of the tournament to
Seaforth’s Gateway Rural Health
Research Institute.
Fans and observers should keep
their eyes open for several golfers at
the course, including defending
champion Brian Unk.
The low-scoring Canadian from
the Canadian Open, Adam Hadwin
will also be on the field and will be
joined by London PGA golfer
Andrew Parr.
Cam Burke, from New Hamburg,
is, as of press time, the closest
Canadian on the course, with several
Huron County golfers vying for
potential spots through the qualifier.
“All of these golfers are good
players,” Doig said.
The Seaforth Country Classic is a
unique opportunity in the area, as
there aren’t many chances to see
world-class golfers in Huron
County. Doig said that the chance to
see these golfers up close is
thanks to the supporters of the
tournament.
“We’re very grateful for the
support we have,” she said.
Tickets for the event are $20 plus
tax for the entire week, and includes
much more than just entry into the
tournament.
“Each ticket has a chance to win
prizes, as well as a chance to win
tickets to the Masters next year,”
Doig said.
Tickets are available at several
golf courses throughout the area, the
information booth on Main Street in
Seaforth, the pro shop at the
Seaforth Golf and Country Club and
at the gate.
The venue will feature bleachers
for the crowd, food, and a live band
playing Saturday and Sunday night
at the hospitality tent.

Chip and a Putt – By
Bruce Skinn
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club enjoyed another busy week
despite the hot humid weather.
The Tuesday ladies had 20 golfers
hit the links on a hot sunny day. The
girls are getting ready to compete
for the Wilma Kerr trophy on
Tuesday, Aug. 24.
The Wednesday morning seniors
had 25 golfers on a beautiful day. Ed
Daer shot a sizzling three-under-par
32 to take low gross with Bruce
Boyd finishing second with a 37.
Daer also won the prize for longest
putt and low net for the day. Bob
Gavreluk was second low net with
Warren Rich third.
The Thursday night men had 36
golfers. The winners were: longest
putt, Lorne Millen and Grant Currie;
closest to the pin, Trevor Hopf and
Dan McBurney and hidden scores
Eric Deyell and Don Watson. Hopf
also shot a 38 to win low gross
honours.
On Friday the club hosted the 25th
wedding anniversary of Marilyn and
Henry Van Heeshe. Around 150
family and friends came out to help
celebrate this special day in the golf
and dining lounges.
On Saturday night the club held
the Johnstone wedding reception.
The 75 guests enjoyed a fun night of
dancing and refreshments along
with a cold plate luncheon. It was a
great night for many of the family
and friends to enjoy the scenic patio.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club is planning another trip to the
Clinton Raceway Slots on Monday,
Aug. 30. Anyone interested can

Outlaws win division
The North Perth Outlaws swept
their way to a ‘D’ Division title,
beating Centre Wellington II easily
in a best-of-five series.
The showdown began on Monday,
July 19 when Centre Wellington’s II
team paid a visit to the Wingham
arena to take on the North Perth
Outlaws. It was the first in a best-of-
five series for the ‘D’ title.
The Outlaws opened the scoring
in the first taking a 2-0 lead, thanks
to the efforts of Brady MacDonald
of Wingham and Nathan Ahrens of
Hanover.
The visiting squad bounced back
in the second, catching the Outlaws
off guard as the Centre Wellington
team put four galls in the mesh.
Their scoring continued in the
third with yet another goal for the
kids from the Elora/Fergus area.
Never a team to give up, the
Outlaws responded hard and fast,
picking up another three goals in the
third period tying the score at five.
Period three goal-getters were
MacDonald with two more, giving
him the hattrick, and team captain
Colton Atkins with a nice top corner
pick.
Six seconds into the overtime
period, Atkins made a play to
Ahrens who took a calculated shot
on the Centre Wellington goal,
beating their netminder and giving
the Outlaws the victory in game one.
Game two in Elora on July 22
started out strong for both teams as
the first period ended scoreless.
However, into the second, Avery
McArter of Brussels beat the Centre
Wellington goalie giving the
Outlaws the edge they needed going
into the third period.
Ninety seconds into the third,
Jacob Mattingly of Hanover, in his
first game back after an injury,
pocketed goal two for the North
Perth Outlaws. Adding to the point
spread was Ahrens and Trent
Buchanan of Goderich, ending
game two at 4-0, putting the Centre
Wellington team on the brink of
elimination. A tremendous effort
from Outlaws goaltender Shayne
Westecott of Lucknow earned him
another well-deserved shutout.
Game number three was played in
Wingham on Tuesday, July 27. The
Outlaws opened the scoring in the
first period with a goal from
McArter.
Second period action saw the
Outlaws net more to give the team a
margin of 3-0. Period two goal
getters were Jacob Mattingly, and
Ahrens.
Atkins picked up the only goal in
period three with a very nice and
well-timed backwards shot from
amongst a crowd of Centre
Wellington defenders.
The North Perth Outlaws went on
to beat Centre Wellington in three
games, clinching their divisional
title.
Always on the run
There was quite the pursuit over the weekend as Over-18 soccer made its way to Blyth as the
season is in its late stages. Blyth took on Wingham II in this match. (Jim Brown photo)
