Some people have tough jobs. The
judges for the Brussels Fall Fair
Ambassador competition on
Saturday night at the Legion needed
all their wits about them as the four
young ladies showed great poise,
intelligence and personality.
To judge something is a bad
job to start with and when the
offerings are so diverse and
excellent – oh my. So
congratulations Morgan as our Fair
Ambassador and well done to Alix,
Emily and Kasey.
TransCan went well, the weather
was great, the racers were at their
best, the volunteers worked hard to
help the Lee family pull off this huge
event. The Richmonds are smiling as
Cody stood proudly on the podium
after a lot of hard work. After 19
years, this event just keeps getting
better. For the St. John Ambulance
volunteers, it’s a very good time to
put their knowledge to practice as
the racers usually have a variety
of injuries that need
immediate attention. Good work
everyone.
Friday evening was a pleasant
time to be downtown. Cinnamon
Jim’s hosted music on the street to
the enjoyment of those out and
about. Keith Hodgins played his
guitar and sang many original songs
from his stool by the building. Very
pleasant.
The Blyth plays are doing well.
The last show for Bordertown Café
was on Saturday to a full house.
You still have time to see The
Book of Esther, so get going.
We’re lucky to have this calibre of
theatre so close, and all Canadian to
boot.
We spent last week in the
company of three youngest
grandgirls, eight-year-old Robyn,
three-year-old Jill and two-year-old
Ella, camping near Barrie. What a
joy watching town girls catching
minnows and just puddling in
several spots of water. I want you to
know I have a very wise Ella, as we
entered the sand and silt of a pond,
the wee toddler clearly repeated
several times “Careful Grandma”.
Now aren’t you relieved to know
I’ll be looked after in my older age.
The other reassuring thing for
me was that water, bikes
and marshmallows still keep
kids happy. We’re resting this
week.
Enjoy the crops and flowers, with
so much rain and sunshine at just
the right time, it’s a joyous
scene.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
The minute the crown was put onher head, Brussels Fall Fair
Ambassador Morgan Deitner didn’t
really feel it.
“I was a little shocked at first,” she
said. “It didn’t really set in until the
next day.”
Deitner was crowned Ambassador
of the Brussels Fall Fair on Saturday,
August 14.
“It feels good,” she said. “Both my
mom and I were really excited, and
I’m excited for the experiences the
position will afford me.”
Deitner competed against
three other girls for the title, beating
them out for the prestigious
award that will see her
experience the Canadian National
Exhibition next year as the
representative for the area in the
province-wide Ambassador comp-
etition.
Brussels’ new Ambassador spent
hours preparing before taking the
stage. She had to research her
speech, local history and have in-
depth information about her
sponsor - The Brussels Optimist
Club.
“It took a while to write my speech
and to study all the information I
needed to know,” she said.
Deitner’s speech addressed a
popular issue: going green. While
she said it was something she had to
research, she worked hard at it and
prepared a speech that impressed the
judges.
“My speech was about the “Going
Green” movement and how its
changed since the [1970s] to what it
is today,” she said.
“I explained how we have to keep
the movement going for our
children.”
Deitner currently works at the St.
Jacobs Farmers’ Market and is
known throughout her communityfor refereeing minor hockey, coaching minor baseball, playingminor hockey and soccer andvolunteering at local Bible
Schools.
In September, Deitner will be
returning to F.E. Madill Secondary
School for her fourth year, before
returning for a fifth year. Deitner
then plans on continuing her
education by studying history and
English, and hopes to become an
history teacher.
Deitner will now be looking ahead
to the Brussels Fall Fair where
she will be one of the main
attractions.

The Brussels Legion Branch 218
was the donated host venue for the
annual Ambassador of the Fair
competition on the weekend. We
are pleased to congratulate
Morgan Deitner on being chosen
as the 2010 Ambassador of the
Brussels Fall Fair. We also
congratulate Kasey King, Emily
Baker and Alix Sholdice for a job
well done in vying for the title and
representing their various
organizations.
The fish fry crew was in Blyth on
Saturday to feed the 200 hungry
diners at the Blyth Legion. Working
for the Branch were Lloyd and
Mabel Glanville, Sharon Robbins,
Chris Brown, Randy White and Rick
McDonald. Good job folks.
Meetings for the committee
chairmen will be held this month to
get ready for the Legion’s year
ahead.
