business people have input on the
development plan.”
The confidential survey deals with
both existing economic programs,
evaluating how they are received
and accessed by the community, and
new opportunities, and how they
should be implemented and will
benefit the community.
Pullen stated that the survey is
very detailed, which will allow for
better responses.
“This will allow any business, or
any former business person, to give
us input on how we should develop
our strategy,” he said.
But the project doesn’t end with
the strategy, according to Pullen.
After the county office has a strategy
outlined, an action plan will be
implemented, which is crucial
according to Pullen,
“Sometimes a strategy like this is
done, but then it just collects dust on
a shelf,” he said. “The action plan
will give it legs and help us proceed
to implement it. It’s a very important
part of the process.”
The survey will run until mid-
September most likely, and a draft of
the strategy based, in part, on the
survey will be prepared for October,
to be approved in early 2011.
The project is already
receiving good results according to
Pullen.
“We’re getting quite a positive
response to the survey,” he said.
“We’ve already got more surveys
completed than we anticipated,
given that it is the summer months
and people are usually on vacation.”
The survey takes less than 10
minutes to complete, and begins
with questions regarding the size,
nature, and future plans of the
survey-taker's company. The survey
then asks about the strengths and
weaknesses of doing business in
Huron County, hiring preferences
and hiring practices.
Following the questions is an
opportunity to grade existing
development plans in Huron County
and a chance to evaluate
opportunities in Huron County.

Geo-caching, photography blended for art
Following hard on the heels of a
successful showing of paintings by
Natalie Hussey, the Blyth Festival
Art Gallery is presenting an
exhibition by another well-known
Goderich artist, Elizabeth Van den
Broeck.
This multi-talented woman says
that she is “inspired by the
landscape of my locality, realizing
that I do not have far to travel to
experience a wide range of regional
variations. Huron County offers up a
myriad of landscapes from lake and
river, to forest and field. I strive for
an element of timelessness and tend
to avoid structural elements that
place the image in a modern
context.”
Elizabeth has been participating
in geo-caching for some time and
has been captivated by the fact that a
series of numerical coordinates can
pinpoint a place on the earth within
a few metres. She uses a GPS device
to not only find a “hidden treasure”
but to share images from specific
locations. Another new aspect to
photography is to geo-tag images
and then link the data with Google
Earth. “I would like to incorporate
this concept into the exhibit by ‘geo-
tagging’ to a map of Huron County,
the various locations of my pictorial
journey,” she said.
The product of her journey is a
number of very large-scale
photographs, printed using archival
inks, on canvas. When an image
reaches such a large size, viewers
feel as though they could “walk into
the landscape”.
The viewer could easily to get lost
in, or perhaps find themselves
through one of Van den Broeck’s
stunning photographs. The
exhibition “Co-ordinates” opens in
the Bainton Gallery, Blyth Centre
for the Arts on Friday, Aug. 13 at 6
p.m. and continues until the end of
the Blyth theatre season.
The Blyth Festival Art Gallery is a
small, enthusiastic committee of art-
lovers who believe that the showing
of a variety of fine art, partnered
with live theatre, is an important
contribution to the quality of life in
the community. They invite
members of the public to be a part of
their ongoing quest to provide high
quality, stimulating artistic
experiences for gallery patrons and
for the community at large.
