Blyth’s final game was held on Wednesday, July 28 against Clinton II. Nonkes did a great job in net during the first half of the game game. Clinton came out strong and earned control of the ball twice. Clinton outplayed Blyth to obtain a 2-0 lead at half time. Blyth’s first game of the tournament was against Wingham on July 26, under the lights at the Ag Park. Blyth knew that this would be a very worthy opponent as they had lost to this team in regular season play. Blyth was able to take advantage of a penalty shot when Greg Roetcisoender scored in the first half. JanPaul VanDorp scored a nice goal with an assist from Derek deBoer.Wingham scored back to back goals to tie the game. DeBoer scored a goal to give Blyth a 3-2 lead at half time. Blyth’s JP VanDorp scored with an assist from Roetcisoender. Wingham scored to narrow the gap in the score. Blyth’s defender, Micah Nonkes, scored with the assist earned by Roetcisoender. Wingham scored twice more, resulting in a 5-5 tie giving each team one point in the standings. Blyth played Brussels as their next opponents on July 27. The last time these teams met the game ended in a tie. Blyth dominated the first half and scored four goals. Hunter Broda set up the first goal and Roetcisoender sent the ball into the net. Defender Matt Porter and halfback Marc Dery set up the next goal and JP VanDorp scored for his team. Forward JP VanDorp and Skylar Geddes worked together to set up the next goal and Geddes ended up earning the third goal of the night. Defender Murray Dale sent the ball up the field and Roetcisoender scored to obtain a 4-0 lead at half time. Roetcisoender injured his ankle and had to sit for the rest of the game. The defenders did a great job of clearing the ball away from their zone and keeper Nonkes earned a shutout in the first half. Leendert VanDorp scored an amazing goal on a corner kick to lead off the second half for his team. Blyth went on to score one other goal. JanPaul VanDorp stood in net for the second half and made an amazing save on Brussels penalty shot, but Brussels nicely headed the ball into the net on the rebound to score their only goal of the game. The final score was a 6-1 win for Blyth. Blyth showed some nice ball control and real team work to control this game. This win earned Blyth three points. Blyth played a stronger second half and showed some great ball control and team work. Geddes sent the ball toward the net and Nonkes sent the ball into the net to score. Blyth had several more scoring opportunities but Clinton’s keeper, Jimmy Watt shut them down. Blyth made some unfortunate errors toward the last part of the game and the two goals Clinton scored were both earned on a penalty shot. The final score was a 4-1 win for Clinton, a heartbreaking loss for Blyth. With only one loss during the tournament, Blyth earned the spot as second in their pool . There were eight teams in this U16 tournament. With only the top team in each pool heading on Blyth was denied any further play in the tournament. Clinton II went on to win the tournament against Goderich with a score of 2-0. Coach Mary Ann Drost was very pleased with the team work and efforts and improvements Blyth showed over the season. Blyth players conducted themselves with good sportsmanship during the season and year end tourney. Blyth had some great players on their team this season who always gave their best performance. Keepers were Wyatt Bearss and Micah Nonkes. Defenders were: Murray Dale, Zach Drost, Micah Nonkes, Matt Porter and Nate Plunkett. Halfbacks were: Marc Dery, Joel Pizzati, Kody Tacheur and Leendert VanDorp. Forwards were Hunter Broda, Derek deBoer, Skylar Geddes, Greg Roetcisoender and JanPaul VanDorp. The team appreciated the help from Tyler Boven, Alex Peters and Quinton Sjaarda, who played up when they needed some extra assistance. In ladies’ action on Tuesday, July 28, the club held an 18-hole members handicap tournament for the McKinney trophy. Maxine Robinson, with a net score of 68, came away with the first-prize trophy with Linda Walker finishing second, shooting 71. On Wednesday, Aug. 4 the club hosted the Ladies Invitational with 12 different golf courses being represented. Sandra White from the Owen Sound Club was the low-gross winner while Peg Cameron of the Wingham Club finished as low net. Sandra also won the closest to the pin for the A/B flight with Wendy Harvey from the Maitland Club winning from flight C/D. The longest drive of the A/B went to Carol Oriold of Listowel Golf Club and Ellen Connelly from Sunset in Goderich was C/D winner. The 38 ladies enjoyed a fantastic day of golf before sitting down to a turkey supper in the dining lounge. In senior men’s play on Wednesday, July 28, Bob Graveluk was the low-net winner, Lloyd Lamont was second, followed by Bruce Boyd. Boyd also was low net with a 36 with Ed Daer shooting 38 and Brian Skinn finishing with a 39, also breaking forty. The Tuesday senior men on August 3 saw Ed Daer lead the way with a fine round of 36. Daer was also low net followed by Bruce Boyd in second and Jamie Sanderson in third. Wayne Gordon was longest putt prize winner. The Thursday night men had fantastic weather for the last couple weeks and the numbers showed. On July 29, 57 golfers hit to the links. The winners were: longest putt, Don Watson and Don Edgar; closest to the pin, Jason Leroux and Brian Skinn; hidden scores, Doug Reinhardt, Dave Tiffin, Bill Kerr and Dwight Leslie while Dennis Dosman picked up the award for most honest golfer. The low gross for the night was Bruce Boyd with a 35. August 5, the group had 46 golfers out and keen to play. The winners were: closest to the pin, Vern Logan and Bill Kerr. Kerr was also a longest putt winner along with Lloyd Erb and Jason Goodall. Bruce Boyd had a 300-yard drive on the first hole for longest drive. Jay Marston was in great form, shooting a 35 for low gross honours. On Friday,Aug. 6, the club held its monthly wing night. Around 40 hungry golfers and friends came out to enjoy the wings and have a few refreshments. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The Seaforth Country Classic is being held on August 16-22 at the Seaforth Golf Club. Wingham club pro shop worker Trevor Hopf is one of the many golfers trying to qualify for this important event. Tickets for the entire week are available at the golf club.
