By Jo-Ann McDonald
It has been a great summer break
for two weeks at the Brussels Legion
Branch 218 and now the many
events of August begin.
We are pleased to report that
Comrade Adam Smith is home from
hospital and is coming along nicely.
Comrade Gord Jacklin is a patient
in Seaforth Hospital recovering
from hip surgery. We wish him the
best in his recovery.
Comrade Harold Bridge has also
been in hospital but is home again.
We wish him the best with his health
issues.
There is plenty going on for the
Branch in August, so Comrades can
expect the call. There are three
banquets and two fish fry events that
require help. The last two Saturdays
in August are busy.
Elimination Draw tickets are at
the Branch and Comrades really
need to come in and pick up a book
to sell. The early bird draws are on
September 10, so it’s only a month
away. Come in and get a book to sell
today.
Congratulations to Carmen and
Sandra (Fisher) Machan on
celebrating their 40th wedding
anniversary. They had almost 125
family and close friends join them
for the celebration held at the
Branch on Saturday evening.
Carmen and Sandra have two
children Ross and Jennifer. Happy
anniversary.

take home the top prize. The first
prize went to George and Deanna
Bacon with 82 points. The second

McDonald with 74 points. The low
prize went to Helen MacKenzie and
Hazel McGonigle winning only 43
points for the day. The lone-hand
prizes went to George Love for the
men and Ruth Pickard for the ladies.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd of about 95 enjoy the
music of the John Heaman Band.
The night was made special with the
celebrating of birthdays and the
arrival of a birthday cake for all to
enjoy.

Members of the Walton Women’s
Institute and their husbands met at
the home of Margaret and Rick
McInroy in Inverhuron. The theme
was “Community”.
President Ruth Axtmann
conducted a short business meeting
followed by a bountiful lunch
prepared by the hostess.
The decision was made to give a
donation to the 4-H organization, as
there were a couple of clubs in the
area. Brenda Perrie is to look after
the display for the Brussels Fall Fair
in September. The search for a
young person to be the
representative from Walton was
discussed for the Ambassador
competition. Helen Craig has tickets
for the Huron Perth Ladies Night
Out in November at the Listowel
Agriculture Hall. Cost is $25.
The roll call: “Have you ever been
involved in a project feeding the less
fortunate and explain your
involvement” was answered with:
giving to the food bank, teaching
others how to prepare healthy meals
for their families, crocheting baby
outfits for those needing them and
helping with Meals on Wheels.
Margaret McInroy gave a
presentation on Gleaner programs in
Canada. Gleaners use surplus fruits
