Another Huron County school site
may be facing closure, and this one
isn’t even built yet.
A new school that is proposed to
be built in Wingham may be moving
to a different location if the Avon
Maitland District School Board
(AMDSB) can’t begin to finalize its
plans and find extra funds for the
build.
In an announcement from the
AMDSB, it was reported that, at a
special meeting held on July 28,
trustees of the school board decided
to place an August 31 deadline on
fixing the existing problems with the
build site at the end of John Street.
Most notable of the problems are
the outstanding Ontario Municipal
Board (OMB) appeals and the
financial problems the board has run
into while preparing to build the
school. They are approximately $1
million over budget on building
costs and delays alone.
Trustees requested money from
the Ministry of Education to cover
the deficit, however, even finding the
funds for their overages may not be
enough to allow the build to move
forward.
“It’s taking longer than the school
board anticipated to make things
happen,” Steve Howe, Manager of
Communications for the school
board stated.
Howe stated that the expected
timeline on the OMB appeals is four
to six months, which will be far too
late for the deadline, which is less
than three weeks away.
According to Howe, costs have
been driven up by unexpected but
necessary grading of the land that
was necessary, draining systems and
the installation of roads.
The trustees still want to see the
school get built at the North Huron
location according to Howe.
“The current site remains the
preferred location for the trustees,”
he said. “They aren’t anxious to
change the site. That would cancel
out all the work that has been done
for the location of the last 14 to 16
months.”
The board remains hopeful that
the situation will be resolved.
In the announcement from the
school board, Board Chair Jenny
Versteeg said that the board
appreciates the efforts made by
Huron County and North Huron
Township, but the problems are
beginning to make the project harder
to envision complete.
“It has been frustrating that we
have been unable to put shovels in

On the ball
The Fire Fighters’ Association of Ontario was back at home again late last month, holding its 109th annual convention in Blyth.
The event featured the parade, pub night, breakfasts, meetings and activities for people of all ages. Games were also held at the
Blyth Community Centre. This game, in particular, matched two teams in a hose-spraying contest, with a suspended yellow ball
being the focus of everyone’s attention. (Vicky Bremner photo)
