The world premiere of Pearl
Gidley by Cambridge-area
playwright Gary Kirkham opens at
the Blyth Festival on July 30. The
play was inspired by the story of
former Blyth resident, Pearl
Gidley.
Kirkham says that it was the name
that first caught his attention, but
after hearing Pearl’s story, he knew
that it could be a play. “I had to
create a play worthy of her story,” he
says.
Pearl Gidley takes place in the
Gidley boarding house when elderly
Pearl and her sister Edith take in a
mysterious new tenant—a young
Vietnam veteran from the USA.
Despite Pearl’s objections to
opening their home to a young man
who they know nothing about, Pearl
cannot contain her curiosity about
his past. Note by note, they
draw each other’s stories out in
this quirky story of unlikely
friendships.
Pearl Gidley is Kirkham’s second
production at the Blyth Festival
inspired by local women. His 2007
hit,Queen Milli of Galt, explored
the story of an 80-year old
woman from Galt, Ontario who
claimed to be the wife of Edward
VIII.
The cast of Pearl Gidley includes
Catherine Fitch, Gil Garratt, Patricia
Hamilton and Sam Malkin. The cast
also appears together this season in
A Killing Snow by Paul Ciufo.
Pearl Gidley is directed by Miles
Potter.
Preview performances of Pearl
Gidley run July 28 – 29, prior to the
official opening on July 30. Pearl
Gidley plays at the Blyth Festival in
repertory until September 4.
The Blyth Festival’s 2010 season
runs June 23 to September 4 and
also features A Killing Snow by Paul
Ciufo,Bordertown Café by Kelly
Rebar and The Book of Esther by
Leanna Brodie. For more

On July 22 at the Regional Equine
and Agricultural Centre of Huron
(REACH), Carol Mitchell, the
Minister of Agriculture, Food and
Rural Affairs and Huron-Bruce MPP
announced that the Taste of Huron
culinary event is receiving $28,000
of provincial funding through the
Ontario Market Investment Fund
(OMIF), a four-year funding
program that supports the promotion
of Ontario foods and ‘buy local’
initiatives.
“When we buy Ontario, everyone
wins. It’s good for farmers and
processors, good for families, good
for the environment and good for the
rural economies. With this fund, we
are expanding local food networks
and helping communities and
industries showcase the abundance
of food that is produced and made in
Ontario,” says Mitchell.
The first annual Taste of Huron
event was hugely successful and was
a named the “Best Event of 2009” by
the Economic Development Council
of Ontario (EDCO), and was a
regional winner of the Premier’s
Award for Agri-Food Innovation
Excellence.
“Last year Taste of Huron, through
the help of OMIF, was able to show
both tourists and the community
what Huron has to offer by way of
local food,” said Jenna Ujiye,
Tourism Marketer for the County of
Huron and Huron Tourism
Association board member. “Thanks
to the support of OMIF again, Taste
of Huron will be able to give even
more opportunity to show the great
mix of amazing food and culinary
opportunities in the area.”
The 2010 Taste of Huron culinary
festival hits Huron County from
August 16 to 27. The festival will
once again highlight the local,
sustainably produced food and
culinary excellence found in Huron
County.
Throughout the 12-day festival,
event participants will join up-and-
coming chefs, award-winning
cookbook authors and food writers
as they savour the best of Huron
County’s local harvest. They’ll enjoy
hands-on culinary workshops,
special restaurant and gala events,
farm tours, markets and more.
