Residents near the Ashfield
landfill site left a recent Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh (ACW)
township council with some
answers, and more requests of ACW
councillors on July 6.
The group, which has been trying
to convince ACW council to look at
alternative landfill sites instead of
expanding the one near their homes,
was invited to come to see options
available to the council.
The ratepayers are concerned that
the landfill site is built too close to
underground water sources, and
expansion could cause an increased
chance that their wells could
become contaminated.
Representatives from R.J.
Burnside & Associates, the
engineering firm that has taken the
lead on the project, assured the
residents that everything in the
landfill is currently as it should be.
The landfill site currently holds
approximately 70,000-80,000
tonnes, and has a maximum of
120,000. The expansion would see it
increased to 240,000 tonnes.
Originally, there was a June
deadline set for work to begin to
expand the landfill site, but the
Ministry of the Environment, the
driving force behind the expansion,
has given ACW five months to run
additional tests.
Council agreed to run additional
ground water tests by drilling
additional wells around the site at a
cost of nearly $70,000.
Joy Rutherford, a hydrogeologist
who spoke on behalf of Burnside,
stated that there were currently no
concerns with leachate problems at
the site, and there had never been a
failed leachate test their.
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek stated
that council would go ahead with the
plan, but did congratulate the
township on its current progress in
recycling and waste disposal
practices, stating that, with new
recycling technology and
standards, and removing asphalt
shingles from their allowable
dumping materials, the township has
already increased the life span of the
dump.
Councillor Barry Millian did vote
for the plan, but wished that council
could slow the process down to
determine its necessity.
“If [Burnside] does its normal
testing and it comes back clean, we
should do more testing to determine
if there is a leachate problem,” he
said. “But if there already is a
problem, we don’t need to spend the
money drilling new wells, we have
to fix the problem we have.”
As per council’s direction, four
new wells will be drilled to track and
measure leachate levels. The
findings from the well will be
reported in November.
