Mercs 2-0.
Brett McPherson connected for a
triple for Belmore, with Josh
Broughman rapping out a pair of
singles.
Kris Wright was the winning
pitcher for Belmore. Chris
Manchester was tagged with the
loss.
In the BB final, Ingersoll defeated
Poplar Hill 7-0.
Paul Sutton was the winning
pitcher and Mark Ritchie was tagged
with the loss.
The host Brussels Tigers were 0-3
in the tournament.
Manager Doug McArter said the
team was disappointed they didn’t
do better in the tournament.
“As host, you always try to play
your best,” he said.
However, he indicated the team
lost their pitcher (Shawn Daw) in
the first inning, when he threw out
his arm in the game against the
Mitchell Chiefs.
“We played well, but everything
just left us,” said McArter.
Currently, the Tigers are sitting in
eighth place in the nine-team Huron
County Fastball League.
He noted, however, that because
their field wasn’t ready, they’ve
played every game, with the
exception of one, on the road.
“We’ve had one home game and
that was played in Ethel,” he said.
“We have a lot of home games
coming up and we’ve played well on
this diamond.”
“Hopefully things will turn
around,” said McArter.
The tournament opened on Friday
evening, with two games being
played. Walton edged part Mitchell
4-3 and Kitchener defeated Brussels
11-6.
In the remaining opening round
games on Saturday, Wingham beat
Ingersoll 3-0, Monkton defeated
Melbourne Mercs 7-0, Goderich
Grizzlies got past Poplar Hill 5-2
and Melbourne Mile doubled up
Belmore 8-4.
In championship round games,
Walton downed Kitchener 4-1,
Wingham doubled up Monkton 4-2
and the Mile edged past Goderich 5-
4.
On the consolation side, Mitchell
defeated Brussels 8-1, the Mercs
downed Ingersoll 4-1 and Belmore
got past Poplar Hill 5-1.
In the AA semi-final, Walton
downed the Mile 3-1. In the AB
semi-final, Kitchener edged past
Goderich 6-5.
In the BA semi-final. Belmore
outlasted Mitchell 6-4. In the BB
semi-final, Poplar Hill defeated
Brussels 5-3.

Walton, Monkton take top spots in Tigers’ tourney
Despite the active weather this
past week, the Wingham Golf and
Curling Club was very busy.
The Tuesday ladies got the week
off to a great start with a nine-hole
scramble, followed by a roast beef
supper. Many of the 34 ladies came
wearing poodle skirts, as the theme
for the night was 50s rock and roll.
This bunch of girls sure have a great
time. The team of Linda Walker,
Debbie Shubat, Eve Rich and Mary
Ritchie finished on top with Diane
Hawthorne winning closest to the
rope.
There were 21 golfers out for the
Wednesday morning seniors. Ross
Peacock was the lowest net winner,
with Lloyd Lamont second and
Rollie Kaufman, third. Bill
Stephenson sank the longest putt on
the eight hole while Wayne Gordon
was closest to the pin. Bruce Boyd
again was the low gross with a 40.
On Thursday, July 22 there was a
plethora of prizes up for grabs as 46
golfers took to the links. It was a
cloudy start, then about 6 p.m. a
light Scottish mist rolled in and
slowly became heavier but everyone
got their game in. The winners were:
low gross, John Dailleboust with a
38; longest drive, Bruce Boyd;
longest putt, Dwight Leslie, Ray
Walker and Neil Bieman; closest to
the pin, Richard Watson, Steve
Nixon and Dybes; hidden score
winners, Trevor Hopf, Bill
Robinson, Gord Fisher, Brian Skinn
and Bob Foxton.
On Saturday, the club hosted the
13th annual Potty Cup tournament.
This super bunch of 62 guys get
together to honour Potty’s (Al
Johnston) yearly trip home from
Calgary. The boys enjoyed an
eighteen-hole scramble, followed by
a roast beef supper. Most of all, the
group shares a few beers and many
tall stories of past years and simply
enjoy each other’s company. The
day ended with a four-way tie at
seven under par between team Larry
Hayes of Teeswater, Darrell Weir of
Georgetown, Don Edgar of
Wingham and Rob Soers team from
Mildmay. After a chipoff. the Soers
team of Ken and Kevin Schneider,
Wayne Reinhart and Rob were
awarded the potty cup trophy. The
club thanks Potty for coming home
and a fantastic day was had by all.
The men’s match play continued
this week with Neil Bieman, John
Dybes, Bill Robinson, Ed Daer and
Doug Neil picking up wins.
The club is having more junior
clinics with the scheduled dates of
the four Fridays in August starting
on August 6. Anyone interested
contact the pro shop for details.
