What a great weekend! Lots to do
and see, people to meet and food to
eat. Funfest 2010 was just that: fun.
It was a pick-your-venue time,
volleyball, cow/horse show, euchre,
hair design or cut, car show with
drooling, a baseball game or six,
music and of course, food in various
forms. Something for every age to
smile about. Thank you to all the
folks lead by George and Pat
Langlois, for all the unseen hours
you spent for us.
The “Church in the Park” on
Sunday morning was well attended
by the area congregations. A shared
lunch and a good visit after lots of
singing, including “Shall we gather
at the river”, of course, made for a
pleasant time. As the guest minister,
Phil Wagler from Zurich was
speaking about life and games and
visions. The beauty of the day in the
park sent my mind on its own road.
Ah, that’s why we worship indoors
in summer.
The vision part of the sermon got
me thinking about the many people
of vision who have improved our
lives over the years. Traipsing
through the bush in the 1800s, aren’t
we glad those fellows saw a clear
vision of life in the future.
We live in this mighty fine village
because people believed in the
goodness of their surroundings and
were ready and willing to work for
the goal.
To the Funfest Committee and all
the workers, as well as our ancestors
who showed us how, we are grateful
that you saw our need for
community, for fun and games, for
recreation and for a purpose in life
beyond ourselves. Here’s to our
future.
In March 2011, a group from
Brussels Mennonite Fellowship
expects to be pounding nails, laying
tiles and installing electrical outlets
in Dangriga, Belize. Working
alongside people from the
community, the group is going for
more than a work project. They see it
as an opportunity to learn from and
encourage people in another
culture.
To raise money for building
materials, the group is hosting a
chicken and rib barbecue at Brussels
Mennonite Fellowship on Saturday,
August 7 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Lyndon John, a local reggae artist
will provide music.
Tickets are $12 for an adult and $6
for a child aged 12 and under. There
is no cost for preschool children.
The Walton Brewers are the kings
of the Brussels Tigers Fastball
Tournament for 2010.
For the first time ever, in the 39-
year history of the tournament, the
Brewers claimed the championship
of the tournament played on the
weekend.
With runners on third and second
and two out in the bottom of the
seventh inning, Matt Shortreed hit a
single to right field to bring home
the winning run as the Brewers
edged past the Wingham Hitmen by
a score of 3-2 in the AA final.
Mel Ross was the winning pitcher
for the Brewers. George Armstrong
was tagged with the loss, taking over
from starter Jason Daw.
Scott McDonald had a double and
single for the Brewers with Scott
Leonhardt rapping out a pair of
singles.
Trevor Seip had a lead off home
run for the Hitmen and added a pair
of singles in a losing cause.
Walton manager Paul Dolmage
said Matt Shortreed was the hero of
the game with his game winning
RBI.
He added that the single by
Shortreed in the bottom of the
seventh was the turning point of the
game.
“Pitching was the key to our
success this weekend,” said
Dolmage. “Mel Ross pitched all four
games for us.”
The Brewers are 6-4 in Huron
County Fastball League play, which
puts them in the middle of the
pack.
Jeff Smith threw a three-hit shut
out in the AB division final as the
Monkton Muskrats defeated the
Kitchener Selects 7-0.
Dale Hopf, Jamie Pfeifer and
Smith had two singles apiece for the
Muskrats.
Doug Hoffman was the losing
hurler for Kitchener.
In the BA final, the Belmore
Stingers downed the Melbourne

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Close, but no cigar
This runner tried to stretch a single into a double, but it was Ty Sebastian who put a stop to
that, tagging him out at second over the weekend at the annual Brussels Tigers fastball
tournament during FunFest. (Jim Brown photo)
