real world, and work regular hours.
She also said that there seems to be
more respect for her position.
Mark Becker, Chief
Administrative Officer for ACW,
said that the summer student
program is a great one.
“It’s a wonderful program that we
are able to do through Canada
Summer Jobs,” he said. “We’ve
applied successfully for funds for
the position for four years now, but
the funds aren’t really what makes it
worthwhile.”
Becker explained that having
another hand around the office
during the summer is a great help,
and, even if they didn’t receive
funding from the government, he
would probably still try to continue
the program.
Becker said that having an extra
employee around for when people
take vacation is great as well.
Some students find their calling
through the co-op program as well,
and return to the place they interned
at like Jennifer Jerry.
Jerry was the co-op student in
ACW three years ago, and has since
returned for a full-time job.
Becker also stated that the
experience looks good on a résumé
regardless of what field people go
into.
Cameron echoed that sentiment,
stating that her experience with taxes
provides good work experience.
The program runs until August 28.
After her last year at school,
Cameron plans on applying to
teachers’ college and occupational
therapy programs.
Membership drive for community centre
The community extends sincere
sympathy to Dwight, Janice and
Dawson Hallahan in the sudden loss
of Logan, a dear son and brother and
to all the Hallahan families.
Calvin Brick UCW’s annual
summer outing is on August 19. It is
to take in Separate Beds at the
Huron County Playhouse in Grand
Bend at 2 p.m. Following the
performance a buffet-style meal will
be enjoyed at the Bayfield Berry
Farm at 5 p.m. For tickets call
Margaret Jamieson at 519-357-1898.
A membership drive is underwayfor the new non-profit corporationrunning the Belgrave Community Centre, Morris-Turnberry councilwas told at its meeting in late June.Councillor Paul Gowing, serving as chair of the board of the Centre, along with Neil Vincent, vice-chair(who is also Reeve of North Huron)and Muriel Coultes, brought councilup to date with the new organization.Gowing explained that membershipsat $5 each are being sold to create a
list of members. Later, at an annual
meeting, those members will elect
the ongoing board to operate the
centre.
The organizing board is seeking an
operations manager to oversee the
facility’s ongoing operation.
Gowing explained that the
corporation pays $1,000 rent a
month to North Huron for the use of
the facility, but the Township also
provides a donation of $34,000 a
year for operation, indexed to the
cost of living, and $10,000 forcapital improvements.Morris-Turnberry provided a grantof $20,000 in its 2010 budget andlast year also gave that amount foroperating, plus $20,000 to theBelgrave Kinsmen for arena
improvements.
While praising the North Huron
donation, Gowing said “it’s not
enough by any means for the costs
(of running the facility) to meet the
standards of the day”. That’s why the
board will be doing fundraising to
make up the difference.
“Community involvement is
needed,” he said. “I see that as a
good thing. If people know they have
to be involved to make it go it will
stay strong.”
