THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2010. PAGE 11. Thanks to the entrepreneurial spirit of a Cranbrook couple, local people and travellers along County Rd. 86 near Molesworth have a new place to buy local food. Karen Smith opened Old 86 Farmers’Market earlier this summer selling a variety of food from local sources – from cinnamon buns from Cinnamon Jim’s in Brussels to jams from Glen Farms at Ethel. The huge store opened on the May 24 holiday weekend and Smith says she’s been pleased with the business so far, both from local people and travellers along the road on their way to Lake Huron. The store came about after her husband Dave bought an empty building that has once housed a lumber business. He planned on using it for storage but when he realized how much traffic was going by the door, he felt it should be used for a retail location. “He’s got quite an entrepreneurial spirit,” Karen says of her husband. Large as the building was, they actually built an addition on the front for a visitor-friendly entrance and built a parking lot at the front for easy access. The front portion of the building houses the farmers’ market with fresh vegetables grown by local growers, baked goods from Harriston Bakery, meats from local processors and even locally-made goat cheese. Saturday mornings there’s an outdoor farmers’ market out front to attract travellers to come in. There’s also a chipwagon next door offering fresh cut chips, apple fritters and hamburgers made with meat from a local processor. Inside there’s a surprise for visitors because the original building is filled with a gigantic clearance store. “It’s been a lot of fun,” she says of the learning process. “We’ve met a lot of nice people.” Farmers’ Market open •Fast Unloading •Trucking Available Please contact us for pre-harvest Roundup on wheat Howson & Howson Ltd.
