At the Branch
Fish fry crew at Hensall Legion
Happy Gang
card party
Special meeting for tenders
By Jo-Ann McDonald
Our thanks go out to Catrina
Josling and Chris Brown for weeding
the flowerbeds at the Brussels
Legion Branch 218. They look great!
The fish fry crew was off to the
Hensall Legion Branch on Saturday
for a crowd of 115. The Branch was
full and tables and chairs were set up
outside to accommodate their
overflowing crowd. Always a homey
adventure, as the backyard of the
Branch is very small and, on this day,
particular hot! Looking after this fry
were Rick and Jo-Ann McDonald.
The Tigers fastball tournament is
this weekend and anyone wishing to
volunteer at the food booth for either
evenings would be greatly
appreciated. Call the Branch and
speak to Sandra.
Elimination draw tickets are
available at the Branch this week so
drop in and pick up a book to sell.
Every member should be involved in
selling the tickets and not just a few.
Something I learned this past week
concerning the Decoration Service
held at the Brussels Cemetery at the
end of June surprised me. A person
in our community thought that the
service held at the Cemetery was
only for those members of Branch
218 who had passed. I would like to
clarify that the service is to honour
and remember anyone who has
passed away and is buried in the
Brussels Cemetery. All the Brussels
churches are invited to attend and
participate in the service and we
strive to do our best to record all the
names of those who have passed in
the past year. The service does
include the Legion’s Act of
Remembrance to honour our
veterans and members of Branch 218
as well.
The reflection delivered honours
all who have passed, be it years ago
or weeks ago, and is a celebration of
our heritage, our ancestors and our
loved ones. There are hundreds of
tombstones in Brussels Cemetery
and yet barely 20 people attend the
service.
I hope this clarifies the
misconception of whom the service
is for and more people will be able to
attend before this service becomes a
memory of the past.
North Huron Councillors will be
hosting a special session of council
to determine who will be awarded
the build contract for a new building
at Emergency Services Training
Centre in Blyth.
The meeting, set for July 22 at 1
p.m., at North Huron’s council
chambers in Wingham, will review
the received tenders and
determine which tender best
represents the interests of the
township.
Fire Chief John Black explained
that the public meeting is regarding a
government grant for the build, so it
has to be decided on in an official
public meeting, but tenders will be
received after the last scheduled
meeting of North Huron Township
for July.
July is usually the month when
buck deer develop their new antlers.
Ergo Native Americans called the
July full moon the Buck Moon.
July’s full moon will happen on July
26. So we can expect bright weekend
nights.
It is also called the Thunder Moon
for thunderstorms are most frequent
around this time of year, as we can
all attest to this summer. Another
name for the July full moon is Hay
Moon.
I had some inquiries this week
about an article that appeared in The
London Free Press on Monday, July
12. The item on page two of that
paper’s sports section, had the
caption “It’s all blood, sweat and
cheers”. The story was about
Elizabeth Morgan who currently is
the performing coach of the London
Silverbacks Cheerleaders.
She is better known to many of us
as Liz Swan, the eldest daughter of
Colin and Jane Swan. She has been
dancing and cheerleading since her
high school days. The Silverbacks
are a semi-pro team in the NorthAmerican Football League. If you wish to read the articlefurther you could check The LondonFree Press website.Last week the village saidgoodbye to Bill and Irene Bromley.Bill was raised on the 13th of Hullettand Irene hails from Clinton. Theyhave spent all the years of their
marriage in the three miles from
Londesborough to Blyth in various
homes. They have been residents of
Londesborough for 12 years. This
time they will take up residence in
Meneset Park, north of Goderich.
The community wishes them all the
best in their new home.
Shane and Tina (Burkholder)
Taylor and their two children, Ruby
and Cal, will call the Bromleys’
former house their home. Shane,
who attended Hullett Central Public
School and teaches at CHSS in
Clinton, is no stranger to many of us.
He coaches T-Ball in
Londesborough. Tina, of course, was
raised in Blyth. It’s wonderful to
have another young family in the
village and we welcome them to our
community.
Village news is slim during the
summer months. It’s not for lack of
wanting to, but I just have drawn a
blank on something that might be
interesting to you. Now if any of you
have some ideas, don’t be shy about
letting me know.
That being said, I wondered about
airing pet peeves. I will start the ball
rolling with one of John’s, thosedrivers who don’t use their signallights. We’ve all uttered an oath ortwo when we’ve waited for that carto pass so we can proceed throughthe intersection only to watch thatcar turn the corner withoutsignalling. Or what about the car inthe left-hand lane who neverindicates he will be turning left
rather than going straight ahead?
Cars using the multi-line 400
highways seem to be missing their
signal lights.
Don’t be shy about dropping off
your pet peeves at the post office to
share in this space.
Another recent event, sort of a
peeve, that apparently had the
telephone wires humming was the
decision by the company who puts
together your weekly selection of
flyers. Under the guise of ‘going
green’ the company that formerly
stuffed them into plastic bags, which
are recyclable, is now wrapping
them in a single sheet of heavy
paper. No longer are the people who
deliver the flyers able to hang them
on your door. Come spring I can
imagine many folk will find lumps
of paper pulp on their lawns. These
flyers will be blowing in the breezes
and being picked up to be read in
soggy states from rain. Some ‘green’
decisions are questionable.
Last Friday I thought to entertain
my grandchildren with a visit to the
play equipment at the park in
Clinton adjacent to the pool and
arena. It was with dismay werealized the equipment in that area isoutdated and not very interesting tochildren. Perhaps it would behooveCentral Huron Council to do someupdating in that area that is usedevery Sunday by race fans and theirchildren. The council had no problemspending money on the Regional
Equine and Agricultural Centre of
Huron (REACH) that doesn’t yet
seem to be used on a regular or
purposeful basis. And now they have
passed a motion to build a multi-
million dollar arena. And that fire
station/castle isn’t even finished yet.
Surely some monies could be found
for better playground equipment.
The children enjoyed the play
equipment at the Clinton Public
School instead.
On Friday, July 9, the Happy Gang
Seniors held their regular monthly
card party at the Londesborough
Community Hall. There were over
15 tables of euchre players that warm
evening.
There was a tie for first place.
Couples Stu and Joyce and Lois and
Marie both ended the night with 71
points. Taking home third-place
money for a score of 70 were Bernice
and Betty.
There was also a tie for the most
lone hands. Couples Harold and
Doris McClinchey and Janet and
Faye both played five lone hands
successfully. The next card party will
be held on Friday, Aug. 13.
