Novice lacrosse team
wins tournament,
sets record with win
While most were enjoying the
sweltering heat of the Canada Day
long weekend outdoors, there were
13 boys, aged nine and 10, from all
over midwestern Ontario that had
other plans. They were hoping to be
the first ever North Perth Outlaws
Novice Lacrosse team to win a
tournament. And win they did.
The Novice I team took part in the
Scott Gerrie Memorial Tournament
in Centre Wellington with two games
on Friday, against two different
Centre Wellington teams. The
teamwork in both games was
absolutely phenomenal as the North
Perth boys walked away the victors
with a 9-1 and 7-0 lashing of the host
teams.
On Saturday the squad met up with
a talented group from Milton.
However, their talents were no match
for the skilled efforts of the entire
North Perth team as the Outlaws
once again left the floor with their
hands in the air and a 3-2 victory.
On Sunday morning the Outlaws
played Centre Wellington IV in the
semifinals, and although they put up
a good fight, it wasn’t enough to
hold off the constant barrage of shots
from the North Perth team who
emerged victorious.
It had to be 35 degrees in the Elora
arena on Sunday night. It was
packed. While the host team, Centre
Wellington III showed up with a full
squad of 15 runners, the North Perth
Outlaws were dealing with an
injured player and another who had
to miss the final game, bringing the
number of players down to 10.
The Centre Wellington team was
first on the scoreboard but didn't
hold the lead long as the Outlaws
tied it up and then took the lead in
the second period. In the third,
Centre Wellington evened the score
at two a piece, forcing the game into
overtime.
Not long into overtime, Trent
Buchanan was on a breakaway when
he was taken out illegally by an
opponent. With the referee’s arm in
the air for a delayed call, Brady
MacDonald of Wingham picked up
the loose ball and threw it past the
netminder for the win, giving the
Outlaws a perfect 5-0 record and
their first tournament win.
Individual contributions to this
victory are too numerous to mention.
All of these boys deserve a huge pat
on the back. Team members were:
Nathan Ahrens (Hanover), Trent
Buchanan, Morgan Grummet-Nairn
(Wingham), Jacob Mattingly
(Hanover), Avery McArter
(Brussels), Colton Atkins (Gorrie),
Brady MacDonald (Wingham),
Lucas Matheson (Atwood), Brett
Zabel (Palmerston), Brett Stevenson
(Walton), Ryan Buchanan (Atwood),
Shane Westecott (Lucknow) and
Lachlan Alexander (Mildmay).

Taking a swing
It was Brussels Baseball Day at the new ball park on
Sunday with action filling the afternoon, beginning at 1 p.m.
with a t-ball game and ending with an exhibition game
featuring the Brussels Tigers. Here the two Brussels Pre-
Mite teams take each other on for some fun in the sun. (Jim

Outlaws crown Regals with 7-1 win
The arena was hot and stuffy in
Guelph and both teams came off the
bench moving slowly. The North
Perth Outlaws dominated play and
most of the action was in the Guelph
end. It took almost to the end of the
first period for the Outlaws’ Trent
Buchanan to score the first goal.
Guelph received a four-minute
penalty for an illegal cross
check and this spurred the team on
to come out strong. Jacob
Mattlingly, after persisting through
an onslaught of Regals, added a
second point to see the Outlaws
leading 2-0 at the end of the first
period.
The Outlaws dominated the
second period with Buchanan
scoring two more goals for a hattrick
and Mattingly adding another,
assisted by Avery McArter and Brett
Stevenson. The dejected Guelph
team, frustrated with the score
became increasingly physical but
that did not deter the Outlaws as
they ended the second period with a
score of 5-0.
The third period found the
Outlaws still in total control of the
game. Colton Atkins scoring a goal
early in the third on a brilliant
breakaway.
While defenceman Morgan
Grummet-Nairn assisted by
Stevenson scored another. The
Outlaws relaxed in their lead and the
Guelph team snuck in a goal with
three minutes left to play. It wasn’t
nearly enough and the Outlaws
walked away with win by a score of
7-1.
