(Jim Brown photo) Brussels U10 team takes silver at year-end soccer tournament The Brussels U10 soccer team won silver in the year-end tournament. The team started out playing Blyth II and it was a close game, but Brussels scored early with Wade Machan finding the back of the net, assisted by Damon Zielinski. Blyth tied it up in the second with Hudson Smith unable to grab it. However, with minutes left, Wade Machan got pushed and it caused a penalty kick. Camden Hamilton blasted one in to give Brussels the first win with help from great defence by Mckenzie McNichol and Kaitlyn Wick. They then went up against Goderich with many players away. The team had to bring up many younger players who were small, but mighty. Brussels scored first with Smith and Teegan McGavin assisting, but Goderich scored two quick ones. Brussels then tied it up with Ronan Jared poking one in with Dana Dolmage assisting. With time running out, the teams went into a 10-minute overtime period but there was no scoring. The game then went into a shootout. Camden Hamilton got the team its only goal, but Loren Polland, McGavin, Jacob Roth and Smith were not able to get one in. Jared played great in net but two goals got by. Brussels still advanced. The team’s next game was against Bayfield and it was another close one. It went back and forth, and Smith was able to get two in with Teddy Jacklin and Taylor McNichol assisting. Bayfield also got a pair. Overtime didn’t solve anything, so another shootout was on the way. After five shooters, it was a tie game again and it came down to a girl shooter. Dana Dolmage blasted one past the keeper giving her team the win. Loren Polland and Ronan Jarred scored in the shootout and Ronan played fabulous in net. Brussels went into championship against Wingham with the team running out of steam. They worked very hard. Smith scored the one and only goal and Wingham took the win. Brussels came home with silver. Thanks to the kids who helped out, Bennett Smith, Tommy Warner, James Black, Devin Johnson, Ben and Joe Jacklin. Thanks for a great year! Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn The weather was the big story this past week at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club. Monday, July 12, the club hosted the Quipp/Rathwell birthday party. This super group from the Atwood area, many who are regulars in the Thursday night men’s night came to play 18 holes of golf before their wives joined them for supper. All 28 of the men showed up to play despite the wet weather. With a rain break for lunch and a couple more stops to put on some dry clothing the boys managed to get most of the 18 holes in before sitting down for a barbecue chicken and steak supper. Happy birthday to Bill and Doug. The Tuesday ladies had pro shop worker Trevor Hopf give them a driving clinic before going out to play their rounds. Many of the 20 girls showed improvement with Trevor’s helpful tips. The Wednesday morning senior men had 23 golfers last week. Bruce Boyd was again the story of the day shooting a terrific one-under-par 34 for low gross honours as well as winning the closest to the pin award. Teeswater boy Lloyd Lamont sank the longest putt. Low net winner was Glenn McMichael with Boyd in second and Bill Brown in third. The Thursday night men had 3 golfers out before a severe thunderstorm washed their night out. Most of the guys were drenched but came into the dining room for supper before birthday boy Doug Rathwell cleaned up in the dice game. The pins awards will be carried over until Thursday, July 22. The men’s match play got underway this past week with winners Jason Leroux, Dan Campbell, Bill Robinson and Bill Kerr who took 23 holes to edge out Doug Neil. Saturday the club hosted the 50th wedding anniversary of long-time curling members Marlene and Stewart Leedham. Fifty family members and friends joined the Leedhams in the dining room for supper – great regards and local entertainment. Congratulations to Stewart and Marlene.
