Walton has made the news again
and not because of anything good. A
stolen truck and manhunt brought
the OPP to Walton in the wee hours
of Friday morning. The OPP were
chasing a truck, which during the
chase, struck the propane tanks at
Dauphin’s Store, causing safety
concerns and the Grey and Brussels
Fire departments were called in and
neighbours of the store were
evacuated.
The chase had the fleeing vehicle
drive through the yard of Anne and
Gerry Ryan’s, Dauphin’s, the back
yard of the manse and through the
minister’s garden, across the
property of Dave Saldivar’s, and
enter the soybean field of Gerry
Ryan’s. The vehicle became stuck in
the moisture-saturated field, as did
the chasing police cruiser, and the
suspects fled the vehicle on foot. The
five-mile block was surrounded, the
dogs were brought in, but one
suspect eluded the police.
Homeowners in the area were asked
to make sure all keys were removed
from vehicles and buildings were
checked for anyone hiding. At last
report, the suspect remains at
large.
The wheat harvest has started and
watch out on the roads. If the
weather co-operates, there will be
lots of tractor and wagons, combines
and other farm equipment travelling
the roadways hauling crop and
moving from field to field for
harvest. The first fields around
Walton came off on Sunday and
there are lots more waiting to go.
The corn has come out in tassel, a
good sign and the heat is really
making it grow. There has been no
lack of moisture and heat in this area
and the crops are progressing well.
There were five area men enjoying
a motorcycle trip last week. The
Zwep men, George, Randy, Jerry,
Nick and Harry left on Sunday for
the annual Zwep Ride. They were
headed for Mount Washington in
New Hampshire. They left on
Sunday and travelled to Belleville,
where they stopped to watch and
cheer on the Netherlands in the
World Cup final.
They arrived in New Hampshire
on Monday and climbed the 6,288-
foot Mount Washington. Beautiful
scenery and area to see, reports
George. They headed back home on
Tuesday and were in Peterborough
on Wednesday morning. They went
to the Peterborough Lift Lock, the
largest on the Trent Canal System,
and had a great opportunity to speak
to the lift operator. They encountered
a bit of wet weather, but on the
whole had great weather. They put
2,300 kilometres on the bikes and
report having a great time.
Our condolences to the Leeming
family on the passing of William
John Leeming. He will be missed by
his children Tom, Mary, John, Jane
and Bob and their families. The
funeral was held at Duff’s United
Church with Rev. Peter officiating
on Monday. Lunch followed at the
church.
Congratulations to first-time
parents, Brian and Jess Dolmage, on
the birth of a daughter, Shayna.
Excited about a new granddaughter
are Frank and Grace Dolmage
The final members of our family
tree have returned to their homes in
the west. Luis and Kendra Warwick
Gonzalas flew from London toCalgary on Sunday evening. Rickand I picked them up from MotherKarin Calhoun’s in Bayfield andtook them to London and enjoyedthe final visit with them. We expectto see them all back again thisDecember for the last McDonaldwedding of the year.
Talking about excited
grandparents, we have George and
Pat Langlois who are on cloud nine
these days. Two weeks ago, their
oldest grandson, Curtis Meyers
proposed to his girlfriend Jenna
Frazer and now, the younger
grandson, Brent Meyers has
proposed to his girlfriend Andrea
Vanderveen. Brent had made sure
George and Pat were available to go
the Meyers cottage in the Muskoka’s
last weekend. He and Andrea went
out for a canoe ride and came back
with the exciting news of the
engagement. It’s hard to believe, but
Pat says she was speechless at
the news. Most of the family was at
Bill and Susan’s cottage, and luck
also had Grampa Bill Meyers and
Joan and Aunt Cathy Meyers
dropping in. The family celebrated
with fireworks that evening and now
the planning begins for two
weddings in 2011. Congrats to
Curtis and Jenna and to Brent and
Andrea. Andrea is the daughter of
Andy and Darlene Vanderveen of the
Walton area.
June and July are the traditional
wedding months and our belated
congratulations go to Paula Bowles
and new husband Kyle Elliott. They
were married at Brodhagen Lutheran
Church and the wedding reception
was held at the Mitchell Community
Centre at the end of June. Periwinkle
blue was the colour of the dresses
and beautiful decorations and
flowers. Paula is the daughter of
Dave and Karen Bowles. The couple
will be residing in Mitchell.
Congratulations to them.
Attending the wedding of her
granddaughter on the weekend was
Elunid McNair. The marriage of
Jana Henry and Kalen Carroll was
held at Bluewater Shores, just north
of Bayfield. The wedding was held
in a beautiful gazebo overlooking
the waters of Lake Huron, with the
reception being held in the venue’s
banquet hall. The ceremony was
held at 6:30 p.m. under a sunny sky
with a slight lake breeze blowing
and the blue waters of the lake
complimented the teal blue and
black of the attendants. The parents
of the newlyweds are Bill and Myra
Henry, Goderich and Paul and Mary
Carroll, Seaforth. Kalen and Jana
will be residing in Goderich.
Congratulations to all.
A lovely garden wedding at the
beautiful Hessenland venue, south of
Bayfield, was the setting for the
wedding of Darryl Uhler and Jen
Lazenby. The couple was wed in the
lovely garden at 11 a.m. on Sunday,
July 11 with 54 casually-attired
guests attending. A delicious dinner
was served in the banquet facility
and everyone enjoyed a lovely
afternoon of music, and socializing.
A slide show of the couple was
shown by the bride’s father. The
newlyweds will be living in
Wroxeter. Darryl is the son of Fred
and Karen Uhler. Congratulations to
Darryl and Jen.
It was a big surprise for Yvonne
Martin when she arrived at the home
of her friend Marilyn Elgie in
Goderich last weekend. Yvonne was
the guest of honour in celebration of
her 65th birthday. She was surprised
to find many of her fellow teaching
friends, neighbours and flying
farmer friends waiting to surprise
and celebrate with her. They had a
marvellous afternoon of visiting,
reminiscing, eating and telling tales
of Yvonne. Congrats to Yvonne.
It was a full house for the
celebration of the 50th weddinganniversary of Jack and AudreyMcLlwain at Seaforth CommunityCentre on Saturday evening. Theguests were treated to a lovelydisplay of the wedding ensembles, invitations and pictures on display. The McLlwain family, Dave andMark and their families and most of
their wedding party were in
attendance. The music was provided
by the Keith Wilbee Band and Jack
and Audrey proved they still have
the dancing touch. Congratulations
to Jack and Audrey.
The family of the late Martin and
Catharine Baan gathered for their
family reunion at the home of Don
and Monique Baan on Sunday

Fleeing suspect at large
A suspect that was sought by Ontario Provincial Police has eluded capture since early Friday
morning, when the suspect, driving a stolen vehicle, knocked over several propane tanks at
Dauphin’s Country Store and Feed Mill in Walton, drove into the field behind the store and
abandoned his vehicle. Above, two officers compare notes outside the Walton Area Landfill
Site. (Denny Scott photo)
