A stolen truck and manhunt brought the OPP to Walton in the wee hours of Friday morning. The OPP were chasing a truck, which during the chase, struck the propane tanks at Dauphin’s Store, causing safety concerns and the Grey and Brussels Fire departments were called in and neighbours of the store were evacuated. The chase had the fleeing vehicle drive through the yard of Anne and Gerry Ryan’s, Dauphin’s, the back yard of the manse and through the minister’s garden, across the property of Dave Saldivar’s, and enter the soybean field of Gerry Ryan’s. The vehicle became stuck in the moisture-saturated field, as did the chasing police cruiser, and the suspects fled the vehicle on foot. The five-mile block was surrounded, the dogs were brought in, but one suspect eluded the police. Homeowners in the area were asked to make sure all keys were removed from vehicles and buildings were checked for anyone hiding. At last report, the suspect remains at large. The wheat harvest has started and watch out on the roads. If the weather co-operates, there will be lots of tractor and wagons, combines and other farm equipment travelling the roadways hauling crop and moving from field to field for harvest. The first fields around Walton came off on Sunday and there are lots more waiting to go. The corn has come out in tassel, a good sign and the heat is really making it grow. There has been no lack of moisture and heat in this area and the crops are progressing well. There were five area men enjoying a motorcycle trip last week. The Zwep men, George, Randy, Jerry, Nick and Harry left on Sunday for the annual Zwep Ride. They were headed for Mount Washington in New Hampshire. They left on Sunday and travelled to Belleville, where they stopped to watch and cheer on the Netherlands in the World Cup final. They arrived in New Hampshire on Monday and climbed the 6,288- foot Mount Washington. Beautiful scenery and area to see, reports George. They headed back home on Tuesday and were in Peterborough on Wednesday morning. They went to the Peterborough Lift Lock, the largest on the Trent Canal System, and had a great opportunity to speak to the lift operator. They encountered a bit of wet weather, but on the whole had great weather. They put 2,300 kilometres on the bikes and report having a great time. Most of the family was at Bill and Susan’s cottage, and luck also had Grampa Bill Meyers and Joan and Aunt Cathy Meyers dropping in. The family celebrated with fireworks that evening and now the planning begins for two weddings in 2011. Congrats to Curtis and Jenna and to Brent and Andrea.
