HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-07-22, Page 2PAGE 2. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 22, 2010.Brussels area resident JolandaSmith will be representing theBrussels Fall Fair at the Ambassadorof the Fairs Competition at the
Canadian National Exhibition.
Held in late August, the contest
welcomes more than 70 contestants
aged 18 to 25 to represent their
community and present their
knowledge of agriculture, their
poise, self-confidence and present
prepared speeches.
Smith said she is looking forward
to participating in the event.
“I’m very excited,” she said. “It’s
going to be a wonderful experience.”Smith said she wasn’t sure if shewas going to enter the competitionin Brussels that has lead her to thispoint, but she wanted to try.“I was undecided if I was going to[compete],” she said. “I wanted to go
for it, but I was kind of scared.
“I said yes, and I won the
friendship award at the Brussels Fall
Fair and at the district competition.”
Smith’s focus in her prepared
speech isn’t completely determined
yet, but she believes she will focus
on the importance of agriculture in
fall fairs.
“I think I’ll talk about how to put
more agriculture into the fair, and
not focus on rides and midways,”she said. The duties involved with thecompetition are exciting, accordingto Smith. “We get to go in a limo fromStratford to Toronto [before the
competition],” she said. “Then we
get to participate in a Mardi Gras
parade, and throw beads into the
crowd.”
Smith thanked everyone who
helped her get to the competition,
including Nicole Nobel, the Brussels
Agricultural Society, her mother,
and the Brussels Community.
With qualifying rounds happening
August 20 through 21, and the
finals on Sunday, August 22, the
event quickly cuts through
the competition, according to
Smith.
“I’m against [nearly] 80 people,”
she said. “I have a two minute
interview with the judges, and that
cuts the field from 80 to seven. If
I’m in the top seven, I say my
speech, and that brings the number
of contestants to three. The top three
then answer an impromptu
question.”
Smith said that, if she wins, it will
make for a busy two-and-a-half
weeks.
“If I win, I have to stay at the
[Direct Energy Centre] for the
length of the [Canadian National
Exhibition],” she said. “I do what I
do in Brussels, but at a larger place -
go around and talk to people. It’s
kind of like a ‘big fair’.”

The pleasant sounds you may be
hearing if you’re in the village are
the responding children, enjoying
their time at Kid’s Corner this week.
It’s a time once a year for all the
churches to share time and talents
to encourage the children in
our midst to care for and share
God’s world. Summer fun is the
name of the game and everyone
involved has a good time. That’s
what summer and childhood is all
about.
The candles were burning on
Saturday as a group of friends
surprised Yvonne Martin and helped
her celebrate her birthday with a
bang.
When you look around our area, it
boggles the mind the things
available to do and see. You can bet
that the weekend you’re invited
away, that’s the weekend the
Kitchener Musical Society band or
another area favourite is coming to
Goderich. Another engagement
interferes with the suppers and
barbecues that abound in this
season, what nice things to
complain about.
Programs are available in the
library and at the museum if time
could be stopped to do it all. Oh
well. In Southampton, the Art
School, established in 1957, offers a
variety of courses throughout the
year to encourage the arts in
community. Two programs this year
are of interest to us. Gwen Tooth,
daughter of Edwin and Winona
Martin is teaching expressive
drawing and in September
“Landscapes in Acrylics”.
Gwen has lived away from
Brussels for years but her parents
were active in the community with
music, art and education as their
interest areas. So if you’re ready
for a little art education get ready
to go to Southampton and see
Gwen.
Life is all about change and if we
embrace it all’s well with the world.
I’m thinking about Bev Brown
adjusting to Stratford and Edna
Pearson waiting in hospital to return
to Brussels. Summer is a time to
think about the people in your life
and the subtle influence they had.
Hello ladies.
Time for FunFest and all the
visiting that entails. Speaking of
visiting, Phil is home for a holiday
next week so all sense of order
(haha) is gone from our lives.
Enjoy the summer.
Bye now, Betty G.W.

A NOTE FROM BETTY
Got him!
It was a close play, but it looks like this runner was out on
Sunday during Brussels Baseball Day at the new Optimist
Park. The afternoon began at 1 p.m. with this t-ball game
and went until the evening with the Brussels Tigers taking
on the Fullerton A’s. (Jim Brown photo)
