On Saturday, July 10 at
approximately 7 p.m. A house fire
started in Auburn. Cause of the fire
is still not determined at this point.
When the blaze first began, manyresidents acted to ensure the safetyof those around and someone waseven able to drag a truck parked inthe front of the house out of the way.The house is located besideAuburn’s Heritage building andwithout the swift actions of thepolice and fire department the firecould have spread. The fire was
located at the front of the house
where most of the damage occurred.
The house, at one point in
Auburn's earlier days, belonged to
Doctor Weir, where he served as
Auburn's doctor until the 1960s untilhis passing. The current owners of the houseare the Popps, who were not home atthe time. The next day there were severallocal residents there to help whatcould be salvaged from the rear ofthe house and brought it outside. Theresponses by neighbors and the procedures followed by the policeand fire departments made whatcould have been quite a dreadfulscene into a salvageable matter tothe Popp house. In addition, an omission from lastweek’s column, a happy birthdaygoes out to Henry Snell and notHank Snell as it was originallysubmitted.

took control of the scene, and all
North Huron firefighters were back
at the station by 10:30 p.m.
This is the first major fire call to
affect Auburn since new coverage
lines were drawn, cutting the village
into three sections covered by two
fire departments; The Ashfield-
Colborne-Wawanosh section, where
the fire was, covered by Central
Huron, and the North Huron and
Central Huron sections, covered by
North Huron, typically out of
Blyth’s Fire Hall.
There has been much debate over
the boundaries and over which
departments should cover which
areas by the affected councils as well
as residents.
ACW township council decided to
change its fire coverage when faced
with a steep increase in North
Huron’s charges, which was
designed to prepare the department
for replacing vehicles and
equipment, instead of paying large
payments out for one-time capital
expenditures. ACW signed an
agreement with Central Huron to
provide coverage before Central
Huron signed their agreement with
North Huron.
Central Huron’s fire department
returned the next day to ensure the
fire would not rekindle itself.
Mutual aid, according to the
“Guidelines on Municipal Fire
Protection” published by the
Province of Ontario, allows “a
participating fire department to
request assistance from a
neighbouring fire department.”
The assistance is reciprocal,
according to the province, and no
costs are incurred by the requesting
fire department.

several options for the community
but the options really fall under two
themes: try to change the law or try
to have their windows approved by
the Canadian Construction Materials
Centre.
Livingston explained that the
entire build code is an objective-
based code, which aims to reduce
consumption through better
building, but it doesn’t allow for
alternative lifestyles.
Representatives of the community
explained that, as part of their laws
and culture, Amish men teach their
sons how to build in a specific way,
and this law of the land was
interfering with their cultural laws,
and they looked to council for
assistance.
Reeve Ben Van Diepenbeek
explained that he had contacted
several townships with different
sects of communities that practice
Amish-style values and found none
had enacted any kind of special
ruling for Amish building practices.
He also stated that it was not
council’s right to override the
building code.
“There is no room to change any
rules,” Van Diepenbeek said. “Even
an agreement letter will not work in
this situation.”
Councillor Barry Millian
suggested that councillors lend their
support not through changing their
own legislation, but by trying to
affect the entire province’s building
code.
“We have to look at the big picture
here,” Millian stated. “We should try
to get the code amended for homes
that don’t have electricity.”
Council was sympathetic to the
problems caused by the building
code, and the potential income loss
for the Amish of not only having to
buy new windows but having to buy
them outside their community, but
stated that they were unable to do
anything to change the rules in
regards to the building code.
The representatives from the
Amish community decided to get the
forms necessary for trying to change
the building code.

A speedy response
North Huron firefighters were in Auburn on Saturday battling
a blaze at the Popp home. The fire began in the front of the
house and was snuffed out before major damage could be
done to the rear of the house. (Photo submitted)
