The weather was hot but the kids had a great time with 38 boys and girls participating. The children, aged six to 13, under the instruction of pro shop workers Trevor Hopf and Ed Daer, were taught the basic skills of chipping, putting, driving, rules of the game and golf etiquette. The highlight of the week was the young and old tournament, held Wednesday, July 7. The children joined the senior men playing a nine-hole “happy face scramble”. The winning team was made up of the two Sanford boys, Damon and Travis, Josiah Moores and Bruce Skinn. Josiah was the hot putter of the group sinking a six-foot putt on the seventh hole and then a 15-footer on the eighth. The team of Morgan Golley, Paige Fear, Max Willis, Bill Stephenson and Trevor Hopf finished second with Blake and Jackson Goodall, T.J. Moores, Bob Johnston and Greg Tiffin placing third. There were plenty of good shots by the young ones. Ryan Smuck put his tee shot on the green of the fifth hole and Coye Edgar sank a par putt on the second hole. After three and a half hours of playing in the extreme heat, the seniors were showing signs of running out of gas, but the kids were still raring to go. On Friday morning the gals and guys were back out on the course again to see if the lessons paid off and they sure did. One of the groups of five had four pars in six holes with a second group having four pars and a birdie. Travis Sanford sank a 12-foot putt for the birdie on the seventh hole. Great playing guys. To wrap things up on Friday, all the children received a certificate, free green fee pass, tees and balls and several of the kids were keen to get out and put them to use Friday afternoon. Cheryl, Amber and Julie did a great job all week with the snacks and the meals and Ed and Trevor with the help of Mark for a few days did another super job with the instruction clinic. For any of the children who missed the clinic or any one who would like more lessons, the Wingham Golf and Curling Club will be offering another clinic held on all four Fridays in August starting on August 6. Please call the pro shop for details, 519-357-2179. Youth golf clinic features young and old tournament On the ball It was a perfect weekend for baseball last weekend and eight teams were in Belgrave to take advantage of that weather. The slo-pitch tournament hosted eight teams on Saturday. In this contest, the Haines Whites took on the Shiellsys. (Vicky Bremner photo) Chip and a Putt – By Bruce Skinn The Wingham Golf and Curling Club had another busy week, despite the hot and humid weather. The junior clinic was the main attraction with 38 children taking part this year. Again this year the group was dominated by the boys but the three girls Morgan Golley, Paige Fear and Alexa Harrison, kept right up with the guys and came away winners in some of the skill competitions. The Tuesday ladies again saw around 25 girls play nine holes, spread out throughout the day. Debbie Currie was the closest to the pin winner while Eve Rich sank the longest putt on the ninth hole. Tuesday, July 20, the ladies are having another ladies night with a 50’s Rock and Roll theme for the night. The ladies (some in costumes) are having a shotgun start at 5 p.m., followed by a roast beef supper. Anyone interested, please contact the pro shop by Friday, July 16. It’s sure to be great fun. The Wednesday morning seniors had the young and old tournament with the junior clinic kids joining the 18 seniors on a very muggy day. The boys and girls had a terrific day and sure appreciate the seniors taking time to play with them as well as teach the rules of the game. There were plenty of great shots made by the kids who hopefully are the future of the club. The Thursday night men had a good turnout with 43 golfers coming out early to beat the rain. Bill Kerr (yes Buff) finally dethroned Dave Gamble shooting a 39 for low gross honours. Great round Bill! Other winners were: closest to the pin, Steve Nixon; longest putt, Tony Barr and Gord Fisher; hidden scores, Dwight Leslie, Shorty Long and Warren Rich. This Thursday night group are a super bunch to golf with. On Saturday, Joel Riley had a bunch of friends out early at 7 a.m. to play nine holes as part of his stag party day. Great way to start a party. On Sunday, the Wingham Golf and Curling Club hosted Boyd’s Farm Equipment. Thirty eager golfers played a round of golf and were joined after by another 20 family members, workers and friends for a steak supper with all the fixings. Thanks Steve. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The Wingham Golf and Curling Club would like to congratulate Corey Conners of Listowel for winning the Investors Group Ontario Men’s Amateur Golf Championship. This home game started off strong for Blyth boys, as they outshot St. Columban in the first half. Blyth’s defensive lineup did a great job of clearing the ball out of their end and limiting the shots on their net. The lone goal of the first half came after some real teamwork from Blyth’s players. Joel Pizzati passed the ball to Greg Roetcisoender, who sent the ball up the field and Jan Paul VanDorp shot the ball toward the net. Derek deBoer sent the ball into the net giving Blyth a 1-0 lead. Defender Micah Nonkes sent the ball up the field and the ball was picked up by Jan Paul VanDorp, who showed some great ball control after scoring on a breakaway to widen the score for Blyth. St. Columban got a ball past keeper Tyler Boven to narrow the gap in the score. A penalty was awarded to St. Columban and they scored to tie up the game. Due to the extreme heat the length of the game was a shortened and a tie was recorded. A shootout was played for practice for both teams. Blyth’s goalie Tyler Boven made a save to earn his team a shootout win. VanDorp, Murray Dale, Roetcisoender and Matt Porter scored for Blyth, winning the practice shootout 4-3. The entire Blyth soccer team should be proud of the performance and grit the players showed to play such a strong game on a hot night. Blyth has really started to come together and work as a team as the season has progressed. The U16 boys’year-end tournament is held in Goderich the last week of July.
