The fish fry crew was off to serve
up dinner for the Seaforth
Agricultural Society on Friday
evening. There were 150 diners who
enjoyed the efforts of the crew.
Helping the Brussels Legion Branch
128 this weekend was George
Adams, Glenn Bridge, Lisa
Glanville, Deb Cann, Chris Brown
and Catrina Josling. Great job
everyone.
The Saturday afternoon euchre
had nine tables of players. Winners
were: first-place, Viola Adams and
Ruth Sharpen with 75 points, second
place, Mabel Willis and Helen
Dobson, 74 points; third place,
Lillian Appleby and Delores Howatt,
72 points; low prize, Hazel
McGonigle and Helen MacKenzie,
37; lone hands, Dorothy Carter an
John Subject. Euchre helpers were
Marg Bennett, Helen Dobson and
Nanci and Danielle Ducharme.
The Sunday night dance had a
good crowd in attendance to enjoy
the music of the John Heaman Band.
Nearly 100 people appreciated the
help of regular dance staff Howard
and Audrey Hackwell and Judy Lee
with President John Lowe helping
out for the night.
There were two young men from
Brussels participating in the Legion
Provincial Track and Field event
held in Timmins on the weekend.
Tyler Smith and Adam Cousins
boarded the bus in Wingham on
Thursday morning and travelled part
way to Timmins, had a layover and
arrived in Timmins on Friday. They
enjoyed meeting athletes from all
over Ontario and attending an
orientation meeting and dinner and
the opening ceremonies on Friday
evening.
The events started early Saturday
morning. Tyler competed in a total
of eight events for the day. He
finished second in high jump, long
jump, shot putt and 100-metre dash,
finishing slight lower in four other
events.
Tyler finished the day second
overall in his division. Adam
Cousins enjoyed the experience and
finished fifth in high jump and
javelin and sixth in the discus. The
boys returned home on Sunday tired
and having enjoyed the experience.
Congratulations to the boys.
What’s in a name?
Several thoughts are sharing my
mind this morning. We’re reviewing
pictures from holidays in
Newfoundland, we took grandson
Andrew to the airport for his Lion’s
exchange to Turkey, went to Barrie
to Curt and Julie’s on the weekend
and I’m thinking about Casey. So
names of people and places are
flying.Unless you’re an avid history buff, place names often do not reveal thedepth of the story. Unless we have the time, energyor interest, these names remain that, just a name. So hamlets like Conn,Violet Hill, Holly Ivy, Duntroon and Damascus remaining anintriguing spot as I peruse the map
heading to see the grandgirl
Ella. Pictures of Bonavista,
Gross Morne, Come By Chance
and Main Tickle still give me a
smile even if I don’t know the full
story. Andrew will return with
names like Istanbul, Ankara and
Pamukkale to ponder. Ah names and
places.
The summer teams are hitting
their stride as working together
within the rules of the games
becomes routine. It’s great to hearthe cheers on a summer evening.Donations are still being happilyreceived by the Optimist Club forthe ongoing work at the new andimproved ball park. It just keepsgetting better and better, and just intime for the Brussels Tigers fastballtournament and FunFest. When we die, we leave only
memories. Each person meets
another in a unique and special way
along their life. Depending on the
time of life and depth of the
relationships, the memories are
much more vivid and will last a
lifetime.
Casey McCutcheon died last
week, leaving a host of memories.
Family ties, Betty and the “kids”,
brothers and sisters, business
connections and friendships in many
locations will be the basis of themany memories that will bring asmile this week as they rememberthe Casey that connected with them.Goodbye Casey. The Blyth Festival is going fullforce with Bordertown Café and AKilling Snow, both available foryour entertainment at this time. Bothplays are well done with lots of
aspects of theatre to appreciate – the
props, great costumes, subtle
lighting as well as the storylines are
all there to appreciate. Keep up the
great work!
Get ready to do your part for
Funfest.
Bye now, Betty G.W.
