Continued from page 13
year, Mr. Westra couldn’t keep us
quiet.
After a couple of months, we started
talking about high school – the
difference between elementary and
high school as well as course
selection – applied academic and
locally-developed classes. There
were many different days of fun
outside. Like the day of Winterfest,
where all of us enjoyed a day of no
work, working together and hanging
out with different people. After
Winterfest there have been many
adventures, and many moments both
embarrassing and unforgettable.
There was Track and Field when we
kept filling our water bottles up for
water fights outside. Everyone was
in on it, and everyone got wet.
Mr. Carr caught a few of us
spraying each other and yelled at us
(you know, one of his Irish
rampages! Just kidding, Mr. Carr!).
We also had a huge game of
speedball outside in the snow.
Everyone was tackling each other
while trying to get the ball or just
tackling each other for the fun
of it.
And finally Camp Celtic.
Thinking back to that week, I can’t
just think of one memory without
bringing up another. There were also
the many trips to the beach. And the
most wonderful trip to Cyprus. The
cool, clear, turquoise water and your
first jump into Georgian Bay. The
water was so cold, I lost my breath!
On our way back to camp some of
us fell asleep on the bus. Brody must
have been exhausted; he was
drooling all over the place. And yes
Brody, we all took pictures.
Yes we are a great group, this
year’s graduating class at Brussels
Public School. We must be destined
for greatness. After all, we’ve been
the only graduating class here to
defeat the “undefeated” staff at the
traditional Grade 8 vs. Staff Two-
Pitch game. The final score was 6-5.
Now look where we are today. The
day that we all knew was coming, is
finally here. Some of us couldn’t
wait for this day, for others they
lived in the moment. But now there
are new opportunities that lie ahead,
waiting to be discovered.
As we get ready for the next stage
of our lives at high school, who
knows what will be in store? I know
there will be many challenges and
hurdles ahead, along with a lot of
tears and laughter. There will be
exams, dating, proms, jobs, studying
and driver’s education. We will all
be going in somewhat different
directions as we get ready for our
future lives, but I sure hope we will
all keep in contact with one another.
We have created such wonderful
memories here at Brussels Public
School. And now we will move
forward and create many new
exciting memories as we enter high
school. We will embrace all the
opportunities that no doubt will be
coming our way.
But let’s remember that old
saying, my fellow Brussels Grade 8
Grads … “Make new friends, but
keep the old, one is silver and the
other gold.”
Continued from page 12
Next came Grade 6. Here we were
split up again, some went with the
Rowdy Remple and others stayed on
the Funny Farm. It was also the year
that most of us decided it was time to
grow up.
In Grade 7, we finally were
together again with Ms Badham. At
this time, friends became best
friends and those we did not yet
know became our friends. This was
the year of the flying helicopter
scissors and JR Missiles, the year of
weird new languages and
nicknames. It was a year of fun
and excitement.
Finally we arrived to Grade 8. Our
final destination in elementary
school. Here we met the infamous
Ms Armstrong. She has overly
prepared us for high school so that
Grade 9 will be a breeze. She
respects each of us and pushes us to
do things to the best of our abilities.
Thanks to everyone who helped
fundraise because Celtic was a blast,
especially the song that one of us
sang at the campfire that really
should have gone “UhOh –
Something’s Not – All Right!”
Watch out – Canadian Idol.
During our time at BPS, we also
have had teachers outside of our
home class. Starting in Grade 4 we
had Madame Walke as our French
teacher. She was the one who taught
us the phrase, le petit couchon. Then
we had Madam Vanhoof. Last but
not least we have had our current
French teacher, Madame Antonio,
straight from the fashion runway.
She has taught us everything from,
estque je peux aller au toilet to all
our verb tenses and proper endings.
Also, we have had many
principals in our time here. For
example, Mrs. Laurie, who we had
during Kindergarten. Ms Black, who
we still miss having. Ms Morton,
who we had for many years and our
current Principal Mrs. McDowell.
She has taught us everything there is
to know about computers.
All of these people are teachers.
They have prepared us for a brighter
future all in their own way. With our
teachers and my fellow classmates
we have, in a decade, created
memories to last a lifetime. Ones we
will never forget. Over the course of
a decade we have created friendships
on which we can rely, some that will
last forever, some that will not
after tonight.
A lot can happen in a decade. By
the time the next decade rolls around
we will be 24, some 25! Some of us
will be married, some even with
children.
It is true a decade can fly by, but
you need to remember to absorb
every gust of wind that comes your
way. Life is truly about the journey
to the final destination. May your
journeys take you places that you
think you can only dream about, but
never forget those important people
who have helped you along the
way.
