PAGE 13.Brussels Public School2010By Jessica Miners In the year 2021, the all-star pitcher for the Toronto Blue Jays will be … Anthony Vader! The 2019 Green Peace Humanitarian Award goes to … Mackenzie McGavin! During the year 2018, the Joe Shuster Art Award will go to our own B.P.S. “Picasso” … Jacob Miller! And, of course, the 2020 Oscar Award for Best Actress goes to … Jessica Miners! Fellow Graduates, Brussels Public School Staff, Community Representatives, Family and Friends, these may very well be some of the achievements of this year’s graduating class of Brussels Public School. Let’s flashback to the year 2000, when we were a group of ankle biters heading to Brussels Public School for the first day. We hardly knew one another when we started school with Mrs. Hall for the first time. Learning to tie our shoes was an easy step for some of us – for others, not so much! We had so much fun building towers as high as the climber out of wooden blocks and we had oversized shirts on backwards while painting pictures of people with arms and legs coming out of their heads. In 2002, we had Mrs. Douma and we were making more new friends. Some of us were cheating on our spelling tests and some were even scared when we had art class with Mrs. Lee. Remember how Josh was our own Bart Simpson – who had to write out “Chicken” what seemed like a million times on a sheet of paper because he thought the word was so funny? And oh, how proud we were of ourselves when we lost a tooth! Do you remember in Grade 2 when we had Mrs. Lee and Mr. Stewart? And how we had to do tricks for our lunch monitors in order to go outside? Does anyone remember when Jamee did the splits and ripped her pants? How about in Grade 3? That year everyone was getting into fights with their friends. We had Mr. Stewart for the second time and Mrs. Mitchell as teachers. That year we went to Medieval Times, had an amazing time at the show, and cheered so loud for the black knight. (Too bad he lost!) Remember back in Grade 4 when Jake started at our school? He had those “super cool” Spiderman legs – now he has these new flashy “F.E. Madill Mustang” legs. Then, in Grade 5 for our year-end trip, we went to the Historical Museum in Goderich and everyone was mad at Mrs. Gilbert because it was an “educational” field trip. I guess looking back, it really wasn’t so bad. We were such a great group of friends here at Brussels! So much so, that after Ashlie left us in Grade 6 for a year, she realized we were “the bomb” and came back for her final years with us. This was also our first year with Mrs. Rodgers. On the first day, when we girls spotted her on yard duty, we rushed to introduce ourselves. Mrs. Rodgers later went on to become our “saviour” during this past year when Mr. Westra was unfortunately unable to accompany us on our class trip. You rock Mrs. Rodgers! How about in Grade 7? Our first year as a split class, when we were all split up. Some had Mrs. Rodgers for a second time, and had a blast with the younger students. Others were with Mr. Westra, enjoying the fun the older students shared. That brings us finally to Grade 8.
