HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-07-08, Page 9THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 8, 2010. PAGE 9. Laura Higgins, a Grade 10 studentat F.E. Madill Secondary Schoolfrom Belgrave, recently returned
from the People to People Student
Ambassador Program.
Higgins was chosen as part of a
select group of students to represent
her community and country at the
People to People Leadership
Summit in the United States.
Participants in the program
complete an academic program
focused on leadership and global
awareness.
Higgins said that the trip, which
ran from June 15-24, saw her
participating in many activities with
other students from across the globeat several locations, includingColumbia University in New York.“We did so much that I had towrite it all down to help meremember,” she said. “And there
were students from all over; New
Zealand, Australia, South Africa,
and a lot from the United States.”
Higgins said that she experienced
many new situations during the trip,
including working on a Mock
United Nations [UN] summit with
other participants. Each student was
given a country to research prior to
the event, who they would then need
to represent in their UN groups.
“Our group chose to try and find
solutions to hunger in Southern
Asia,” Higgins said. “We then had to
present our resolutions to the
group.”
“I researched Guatemala, and our
group’s theme fit well, since
Guatemala suffers from hunger,” she
said. “So I really had to think about
how to fix the hunger problem, then
apply it to the nation I represented.”
The event was designed to help the
students prepare for their futures,
with an emphasis on college
preparation according to Higgins.
“There were inspirational
speeches made by White House
Correspondents, UN ambassadors...
[and] representatives from the
schools we were at,” she said. “The
college administrator from
Columbia spoke to us about what to
include in our college applications
and what schools look for.”
While Higgins said she saw
amazing sights throughout the cities
she visited, including New York’s
Statue of Liberty and Washington
D.C., she said the most memorable
part of the trip was the friends she
made.
“We got to see incredible cities,
and see the sights there,” she said.
“But the friends you make in the
program are what really stick with
you.”
Higgins was nominated for the trip
by previous teachers for her
academic prowess and civic
involvement.
The People to People program was
created by former American
President Dwight D. Eisenhower in
1956, who wished to create a future
in which people communicated and
war wasn’t an ongoing reality.
On Saturday, June 26 Ross and
Barbara Anderson, Doreen and Rob
Roy of Peterborough, Anne
Catherine and Richard Anderson of
Goderich, Nancy and Rick Ball of
Hanover, Sheila Cousins of Guelph,
Donna Leach of London, Bob and
Jane Grasby, and Nancy and Lloyd
Michie all attended a reunion of the
descendants of William Michie at
the home of Ross Nichol on
Cranbrook Line near Brussels.
There were 57 family members
present from as far away as Lucky
Lake, Saskatchewan, Ottawa,
Guelph, London, Shelburne, Milton
and the surrounding areas.
All enjoyed visiting as well as
looking at family pictures while the
children were excited to have
horseback rides.
The community extends
congratulations to Amy Cook,
daughter of Paul and Karen who
received her Bachelor of Arts with
distinction in Honours Kinesiology
and Physical Education on June 8 at
Wilfrid Laurier University.
Amy is currently employed by PT
Health.
