Sports
The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club had a good finish to June and
a great start in July.
Last Tuesday between 25 and 30
ladies enjoyed a round of golf
throughout the day with many of the
gals enjoying some lunch in the
dining lounge. Linda Walker was
the longest putt winner on the tough
eighth hole. On Tuesday, July 13 the
ladies are having a driving clinic
between 1 - 2 p.m. and 4:30 - 5:30
p.m.
The Wednesday morning seniors
wrapped up June on a cool morning
with 22 golfers taking to the links.
The winners were low gross, Gerry
Edwards; second, Bruce Boyd and
third, Gar Lawrence. The longest
putt was made by Doug Barfoot
while Lawrence took the prize for
closest to the pin. Bruce Boyd
remained the guy to beat posting the
low gross again this week shooting
a 37.
The Thursday night men had 26
golfers out before taking in the July
1 fireworks display. The group
again had a terrific night to play
golf. The winners were longest putt,
Kevin Green and Jason Laroux and
hidden scores, Grant Currie and
Bob Foxton. Dave Gamble, for the
third week in a row, fired the low
gross, this week shooting a 40.
Friday, July 2 was the club’s
monthly golf and wing night. Over
40 golfers came out and played a
round of golf before enjoying each
other’s company on a beautiful
night on the patio. The girls and
guys shared many stories and lots of
laughs as well as our tasty, hearty
wings along with a salad and of
course, cold refreshments.
On Sunday, the club hosted the
Remmington family who withstood
some extreme heat playing nine
holes of golf and most of all
enjoying each other’s company. A
great way to get together and share
some old stories and a super form of
exercising.
OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS
It is sure great to see several
people taking advantage of the view
from our scenic patio.

Blyth U16 wins, draws
On Wednesday, June 30, Blyth
was host to the St. Columban soccer
squad. With several Blyth players
unable to attend the game, two U14
players, Tyler Boven and Quinton
Sjaarda, were pulled up to help out
the team. The combined might of the
remaining U16 players and the U14
additions were able to beat St.
Columban’s squad 6-4.
Blyth made some great shots on
their opponent’s net in the first half,
but the goalie stopped several shots
denying Blyth a goal. Micah Nonkes
played the first half in net for Blyth
and made some nice saves.
However, three St. Columban balls
passed the goal line and at halftime
Blyth was behind by three goals.
Blyth came out strong in the
second half and finally figured the
game out.
Greg Roetcisoender sent the first
ball into the St. Columban net on a
breakaway. JanPaul VanDorp sent
the ball into the net after a nice long
shot from midfield for Blyth’s
second goal of the night. Leendert
VanDorp earned a goal with an assist
from JanPaul VanDorp.
Roetcisoender earned the final goal,
his hattrick goal of the night to seal
the lead for Blyth. Tyler Boven
covered the net for Blyth in the
second half and only let one shot get
past him.
Blyth played with improved skills
and determination in the second half
to come from behind and win the
game.
The entire team worked hard
together and stepped up their game
to come from behind and win the
game.
On June 16, the Blyth boys U16
soccer squad hosted a game against
Brussels co-ed squad. This was a
very evenly-matched game. It was a
windy night and both teams had a
difficult time controlling the ball
against the strong gusts of wind.
Brussels scored after a penalty shot
in the first half to take the lead in the
game.
The strong winds didn’t let up for
the entire game and frustration was
felt from all the players as the wind
was a difficult hindrance in the
game. With very little time left in the
second half Skylar Geddes landed
the ball into the Brussels net with an
assist from Leendert VanDorp. The
score ended in a 1-1 draw.
U14 Hurricanes beat Goderich 5-0
The Howson Hurricanes bested
Goderich 5-0 in U14 soccer at
Sparling’s field in Blyth on July 1.
The Hurricanes started off well,
keeping control of the play and
keeping Goderich away from the
Blyth net. The Hurricanes finally
broke onto the scoreboard midway
through the half. Melissa Van Schaik
set up Megan Hoggart for the first
Hurricane goal. Leanne Plunkett
netted another one, with Hoggart
assisting, before the half was over.
Mckayla Nonkes took net for the
Hurricanes in the second half.
Nonkes did a good job keeping
Goderich off the scoreboard, as
Goderich put up some offence.
Holly Howson set up Van
Schaik for a goal to start off the
second half.
Mackenzie Nesbitt finished off the
Hurricanes scoring by hitting the
net twice before the end of the
game
. Tine Verschaeve picked up one
assist.
