The Citizen, 2010-07-01, Page 8PAGE 8. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JULY 1, 2010.Sports The weatherman again played a big part at the Wingham Golf and Curling Club last weekend. The great thing about the course is that there is a superb draining system so most of the rainfall disappears quickly. Tuesday’s ladies’ and senior men’s morning were almost entirely washed out. Only a few of the diehard lady golfers came out in the late afternoon to get their round in. On Wednesday, the club hosted the Women’s Shelter Tournament. The 70 ladies enjoyed nine holes of golf before getting together in the club house for lunch and refreshments. Tournament organizer Marilyn VanderWoulde did a great job for this very worthy cause and everyone had a very good day. Thursday started off rainy again, but cleared up just in time for men’s night. The 51 golfers had just a terrific night for playing golf and some of the guys took advantage of the scoring conditions. John Dailleboust took low gross honours with a sizzling 36. Other winners were closest to the pin, Dan McPherson and Doug Neil; longest putt, John Nicholson and Don Edgar and hidden scores, Mark Foxton, Joe O’Rourke and Lloyd Erb. This Thursday, even though it is a holiday, there will still be men’s night and again the weatherman is calling for a great night. On Friday the Wingham Golf and Curling Club held a fun scramble. It was sure great to see the course and patio busy on a Friday night for couple’s day. This Friday, July 2 is golf and wing night at the club. The Wingham Golf and Curling Club’s junior clinic starts Monday, July 5 and runs until Friday, daily 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Trevor and Ed report the clinic is full and they are looking forward to working with the children all next week. OUT OF BOUNDS NEWS The tournaments at the clubs have began and we ask anyone who is interested in holding a tournament or a fun day to book your tee times as soon as possible. It was Pre-Mite baseball action in Brussels with Blyth visiting their crosstown rivals. (Vicky Bremner photo) Both Brussels U10 soccer teams faced off recently, but both teams proved to be equal, fighting to a 1-1 draw. Goals were scored by Hudson Smith (Brussels II) and Ronan Jared (Brussels I). The Brussels U12 team travelled to Bayfield, but were unable to topple their opponent, losing 3-2 to the Bluewater team. Both Brussels goals were scored by Kieran Jared. The Brussels U14 girls had three games last week, beating Goderich by a score of 3-1, and fighting to 2-2 draws against both Bayfield and St. Columban. Brussels U10 I and II fight to 1-1 draw Outlaws triumph over Wallaceburg, Centre Wellington, lose to Mimico It has been a busy couple of weeks for the Outlaws, a team composed of players from many Mid-Western Ontario communities including Brussels, Wingham, Hanover, Atwood, Goderich, Mildmay, Gorrie, Lucknow, and Palmerston. In Arthur on Sunday, June 6, the Outlaws squared off with a short bench of only eight players and a goalie, against the Wallaceburg Griffins. Despite an unfortunate penalty at the start of the game, the Outlaws outpaced, outshot and outplayed the Griffins. The Outlaws won by a score of 7-1 with two goals each for Brady MacDonald and Avery McArthur and a goal for Ryan Buchanan, Morgan Grummet Nairn and Jacob Mattingly. The second game of the tournament pitted the Outlaws against a strong team with a full bench of players, the Mimico Mountaineers. Despite three rapid shots on the Mountaineer goal in the first minute of play, the two teams ran a tight game, matching goals and keeping the game fast-paced and close. The score at the end of the first period found the Outlaws down by a score of 2-0. The Outlaws came out strong in the second period from the face off with two good shots from defenceman Grummet Nairn and centreman Colton Atkins. The Outlaws continued to battle and Grummet Nairn found the Mountaineers’ net along with a speedy breakaway goal from Avery McArthur. A clean open-field hit on the Mountaineer goalkeeper by Colton Atkins seemed to have stimulated the tired North Perth team. This tied the game at two until Jacob Mattingly came off the bench and scored, which saw the Outlaws with a 3-2 lead. Unfortunately with seconds left in the second period the Mountaineers tied up the game. Third period was a continuous battle with strong offence, defence and some excellent saves by Shane Westecott in goal. The Outlaws finished the game strong but were defeated by a score of 6-3. Wednesday, June 9 saw the Outlaws back to League play at home in Wingham hosting the Centre Wellington III team. The disappointing loss in Arthur was certainly not in the young players’ heads as they rained down over 20 shots on the unfortunate Centre Wellington goalie just within the first period. However, it seemed the visitors had learned from their previous home defeat by the Outlaws, and although the Centre Wellington side were outshot and outplayed the score was only 1-0 in favour of the host team at the end of the first period. The goal, a power-play marker was scored by Brady MacDonald. The second period saw Centre Wellington start to win more possessions and a power-play goal evened the score. This stimulated the Outlaws, adding two goals to their tally – one from Mattingly and one from Avery MacDonald to close the second period with a lead of 3-1. With less than a minute gone in the third, unrelenting pressure from the Outlaws resulted in a marker for Nathan Ahrens. The visitor’s hopes were quickly dashed with two North Perth goals, one coming from Mattingly courtesy of a beautiful run and feed from Avery MacDonald, the other from Nathan Ahrens. With two goals in the last two minutes, one a reward for the tireless effort of the free-running Colton Atkins and one for the speedy Avery MacDonald, the home victory was sealed by a score of 8-3. On the run It was a tough night for the Brussels U16 squad, who lost by a score of 6-0 to visiting Clinton last week. (Vicky Bremner photo)
