A beautiful weekend finally! The
first day of summer was on Monday
and this is the final week of school
(plus next Monday). The farmers are
happy with the heat as you can
almost see the corn growing and the
wheat turning. The last of the white
beans have been planted (I hope) and
before you know it, harvest will be
here.
Congratulations to Cory Smith
and his new wife Erin on their
marriage last weekend. Cory is the
son of Ken and Linda Smith. The
wedding was held in a tent at the
bride’s home in Atwood and the
reception was held at the Listowel
Golf and Country Club.
Our speedy recovery wishes go
out to Casey McCutcheon who is a
patient in Listowel Hospital and to
Mel McCutcheon who is a patient in
London.
A special group of friends
gathered at the Walton Inn last week
to celebrate a young man’s birthday.
Shawn Rennick celebrated his
birthday with mom Carol, Marlene
Glanville, Yolanda Gubelman,
Jeanette Robinson, Judy Beuerman
and Karen Braecker. The group
enjoyed breakfast and having some
fun together.
Congratulations to Gayle Prout of
Walton who has graduated fromGeorgian College as a RegisteredPractical Nurse. She was part of 300grads participating in the ceremonieson June 10. A special surprise forGayle was her achievement ofmaking the Dean’s Honour Roll.Gayle is the daughter of Peter and
Isabel Campbell, who attended the
graduation exercise.
The Blake family keeps on
celebrating and this time, the
youngest child of George and Marie
Blake, Julie and husband Steve
Wharton, celebrated their 25th
wedding anniversary. Friends and
family gathered for a surprise party
for them in the shed at Cam and
Laurie Procter’s. The special couple
was picked up by Cam in his antique
car to go for a drive and when
returning to pick up Laurie, they
drove right into the shed and
surprise! The group enjoyed a
delicious meal of barbecued
chicken, salads and the rest of the
meal was provided by those
attending. They had an enjoyable
evening together and congrats to
Steve and Julie.
A local man has earned top
honours for a metal sculpture he
created. Mark Breckenridge of
Hac’N’Wac Welding was invited to
enter the contest hosted in New
Brunswick for only a dozen or so
creative welders. He welded, cut,
brazed and drilled a magnificent
sculpture of a life-sized eagle with a
six-foot wing span. He estimates it
took about 100 hours to complete
the project. Mark won a $10,000
first prize and the eagle has been left
in New Brunswick on display
for a time. Mark is the son of
Fran Breckenridge. CongratulationsMark. Our sympathies are extended toEdna Pletch and family on thepassing of her husband Tom, of 60years. He will be missed by hischildren Karen, Don, Bonnie andSteve and their families. Tom was a
regular fixture on the front porch of
the Pletch home after his retirement
and was kept busy waving at those
he knew driving by. He had been a
resident at Huronlea for the past
couple of years. Our deepest
sympathies to all.
Our sympathies are extended to
Francis VanderVeen and family on
the passing of her husband,Abraham
of 56 years. He will be missed by his
children Sylvia, Jeannette, Andy,
George, Frank and Robert and
families. Abe and Francis and family
moved to their farm on McNabb
Line in 1974 and operated a dairy
farm for many years until son
George was married and assumed
the responsibilities. They went on to
raise beef cattle with son Robert
running the operation. Our
condolences to all.
Congratulations to Joan Perrie
who participated in the senior games
held in St. Marys this year at the new
Pyramid Complex. The District

Huron/Perth/Middlesex had 500
senior athletes participating in the
many varied events. Joan
participated in the prediction swim
event and she won the gold medal
for her event. She did the crawl
stroke, four lengths of the pool, only
five seconds off her predicted time
of two minutes and 20 seconds. The
senior games banquet was held in
Exeter on June 17 and Joan receivedher gold medal. Congrats to Joan. The first of four Walton boys’weddings have begun. It was abeautiful summer’s day on Saturdayfor the wedding of Darryl Houstonand Jodi Semple at MelvillePresbyterian Church. Jodi was

the home of Chad and Crystal
McCallum following the wedding.
