A Killing Snow is Ciufo’s second
play to premiere at the Blyth
Festival. His 2007 hit,Reverend
Jonah, was a finalist for the 2008
Governor General’s Literary
Awards.
Familiar faces appearing in A
Killing Snow include Catherine
Fitch, Gil Garratt and Lisa Norton.
The cast also includes Patricia
Hamilton, who makes her Blyth
Festival debut, and Sam Malkin,
whose last appearance at the festival
was in 1979. A Killing Snow is
directed by Kate Lynch.
Preview performances of A Killing
Snow will run June 23 -24, prior to
the official opening on June 25. A
Killing Snow plays at the
Blyth Festival in repertory until
August 13.
An outdoor theatre came to
Belgrave on Friday, June 18. A
three-storey inflatable movie screen
was erected on the lawn at the
Belgrave Community Centre and by
8:30 p.m. on a beautiful spring
evening, children, parents and
grandparents covered the lawn with
blankets and lawn chairs awaiting
the showing of the film Up.
The East Wawanosh Public School
Parent Council made the
arrangements for this family night
and outdoor movie. President
Christine Gulutzen, welcomed
everyone and introduced Paul and
Kim Coultes, who will be going to
Nicarauga in September on a
medical mission. Donations at the
entrances to the grounds will go to
them to help with their expenses for
the trip.
Donations of non-perishable food
for the local food bank were also
taken at the entrance. The Grade 7
and 8 students and their parents
operated a snack booth with the
proceeds going to their trip next
year.
Many parents and volunteers took
part in making this evening.
On Saturday, June 12, Barbara
Anderson attended a school reunion
at the old Hensall School where she
taught Grades 1 and 2 for four years
from 1944 to 1948. She was
welcomed by many of the former
pupils who were delighted to see
their teacher from their younger
days.
Nancy Ball of Hanover
accompanied her mother to the
reunion and while in Hensall they
visited with Freda Johnston at the
Queensway Retirement Home.
The community extends sincere
sympathy to Bryan and Yvonne
Coultes and families in the recent
death of their mother Edythe Coultes
who passed away at Huronlea Home
in Brussels on Saturday, June 12.
Sincere sympathy is extended
from the community to Donald Dow
and families, Ross and Ada Taylor
and Ivan and Elly Dow in the recent
loss of Gloria Dow.
The community also extends
sincere sympathy to the relatives of
Tom Pletch who passed away at
Huronlea Home for the Aged,
Brussels.
The Belgrave Women’s Institutemet on Tuesday, June 15 with 13members and four guests present.The president, Doreen Markswelcomed everyone and read “OurTroubles” and “Footprints” followedby the Opening Ode and the Mary
Stewart Collect.
The minutes of the last meeting
and financial report were given by
Dorothy Coultes. District President
Nancy Jardin reported on the FWIO
Conference she attended in
Waterloo, and mentioned the
Historical Society meeting to be held
in Tavistock on August 3.
Free-knitting patterns for Canada
Comforts items are available from
Nancy. The Branch has a catering
booked for July 15 and the next
meeting will be on September 21.The program convenor, DiannaRobinson introduced Dave Riachfrom Davara Studio in Blyth whodemonstrated both stained glass andpottery crafts. He showed how to cutthe glass then polish it and solder
two pieces together.
Samples of four types of clay were
shown, which comes in 40-pound
boxes, from Alberta and
Newfoundland. He described the
firing and glazing of the pottery and
answered many questions.
A door prize of a stained glass leaf
was given to Pat Hunking for having
the lucky birthday. He was thanked
with a gift for an interesting
program, followed by lunch and a
social time.
In an issue of The Citizen earlier
this month, the report of the
Brussels United Church Women’s
May meeting incorrectly identified
Joan Bernard as showing pictures
and telling of her trip to
China. It was actually Pastor
Sandra Cable who travelled to
China and gave a presentation on the
trip.
We apologize for any confusion
this may have caused.
It was a smaller crowd than usual
at the Cranbrook Hall on Friday
night. There were five and a half
tables in play, but there was still a lot
of laughs.
It was hosted by Allan Edgar and
Viola Adams.
Winners were: share the wealth,
Viola Adams and Marion Harrison;
travelling lone hand, Viola Adams;
high lady, Delphine Dewar; low lady,
Beryl Smith; lone hands, Jean Dewar
and Leona McDonald; high man,
Marion Harrison; low man, Allan
Edgar; lone hands, Neil Hatt; lucky
tally, Keith Turnbull, Helen Dobson,
Sharon Freeman, Mary Davidson,
Adrian Verstoep, Judy Hahn, Allan
Martin, Myrna Burnett and Helen
Cullen.
The next euchre party at the hall
will be Friday, July 2 at 8 p.m.
