Ruth Long was the worship leader
at Londesborough United Church on
Sunday, June 20.
Joan Whyte read the morning’s
Minute for Missions titled “Partners
in a Vision”. For many years
following church union an old
farmhouse in Seoul, South Korea
was home to missionaries in that
country. It was supported by monies
donated to the Mission and Service
Fund of the United Church of
Canada. Today it is a heritage
building surrounded by skyscrapers
and streetlights and is still
ministering to the needs of Koreans.
However it is now known as the
Women’s Peace House and is owned
by the Presbyterian Church of the
Republic of South Korea.
During the children’s time, Ruth
remarked that it was Father’s Day.
She noted that fathers and
grandfathers are very important to
our lives for from them we learn
many things. They teach us many
things, they give us gifts and they
read/tell us stories.
Ruth told the children that the
scripture reading tells the story of
how Jesus healed a man of a very
nasty disease. The man was so
grateful he wanted to stay with Jesus
and listen to Him teach. But, Jesus
sent the man away to tell His story to
others. The stories of the past come
through generations of storytellers.
The scripture passage read by Mrs.
Long was the account of Jesus
removing unclean spirits from an
outcast of society. Clearly the man
suffered from depression and
Christ’s actions brought him back
into society. The morning’s
responsive reading was Psalms 42
and 43. Those psalms contain
overtones of despair and depression.
They are a plea to God for help in
returning to a state of happiness.
That search for happiness is
universal and far reaching. Ruth
suggested that true happiness is not
found in the accumulation of
‘things’ but rather in a close
relationship with God.
Happiness does not come from a
magic antidote of some kind but
from a belief in God. She asked the
question, “Without a belief in God,
what is the purpose of life here on
earth?”
Everyone, she suggested, will at
times feel depressed and out of touch
with God. Christians can find their
way back to happiness through their
community of faith, their family and
nature. God’s love is in all these
things. In all circumstances of life
God is with us; we need only to trust
and have faith in Him and His love.
“Love Him” was the anthem
shared by the senior choir.
Bruce Whitmore will be the
speaker on July 4 for the service at
Ball’s Cemetery at 3 p.m. Also
taking part in the service are The
Harbouraires Men’s Choir and Jim
Craig on the bagpipes.
Next Sunday, June 27, Margaret
Hern will be conducting the service
at Londesborough United. There
will be no Sunday services in July.
The floor in the church basement
will be replaced during that break.
Central Huron Council voted to
ratify its committee of the whole
recommendation to approve the
Huron County mandatory septic
system inspection plan in principle,
but not without some discussion on
the matter.
Councillor Brian Barnim said that
just days before council’s June 14
meeting, he saw sewage being
pumped out into an open field for
spreading, but it was very close to a
waterway and a wetland.
“That didn’t make a ton of sense
to me,” Barnim said.Barnim said that he would like tosee the proposed program come
back to council with some revisions.
Councillor Marg Anderson
reiterated some comments she had
heard from ratepayers who had
contacted her, who said they were
not in favour of the program.
“There haven’t been any public
meetings where people have been
allowed to vote on this or discuss it,”
she said.
The motion was carried, but
councillors have changes they want
made before the program is
officially approved.
