The Wingham Golf and Country
Club enjoyed a busy week both on
the course and in the clubhouse.
The Tuesday ladies got things
rolling with a bring-a-friend-night
scramble.
Forty-two ladies played a fun
scramble before sharing some
stories and laughs in the dining
lounge. Ladies captain Linda
Walker did a great job organizing
the event and the girls had some fun
with the clues Linda had tied to the
flag sticks. The gals have done a
super job working on the flower
beds around the tee blocks which
sure does add to the appearance of
the golf course.
The Wednesday morning senior
men again experienced some wet
weather. Bruce Boyd had the low
round of the morning with a
sizzling 36. Bruce also was low-net
winner, with Jamie Sanderson
finishing second and Ross Peacock
in third. Bob Foxton finished
closest to the rope and Bill Brown
was closest to the pin.
The Thursday night men again
had terrific weather and 46 golfers
took advance of the great
conditions. The winners were:
closest to the pin, Mark Foxton and
Terry Armstrong; longest putt,
Harry George and Dave Gamble;
hidden scores, Tony Barr and Doug
Rathwell and Warren Rich won the
prize for most honest golfer. Low
gross of 38 was shot by Gamble
and Bill Robinson.
On Saturday the club hosted the
fourth annual Doctor Recruitment
Tournament. Sixteen teams played
a nine-hole scramble on a hot sunny
day, followed by the traditional ball
drop. Afterwards, around 90
hungry golfers and guests enjoyed
a delicious roast beef buffet dinner.
The Doctor Recruitment
Committee, led by Doug Skinn, did
a fantastic job organizing the day.

The Howson Hurricanes had a
busy week in U14 Girls soccer. They
played a regular season game
against Wingham MMI at Sparling’s
field on June 17. Wingham got off to
a quick start scoring in the first few
minutes. That goal held until late in
the half when Leanne Plunkett put a
head pass up to Mackenzie Nesbitt,
she took the ball in for the first
Hurricane goal.
The second half started off well
for Blyth when Nesbitt netted her
second goal. Wingham came to life
scoring two quick goals to take the
lead. The Hurricanes battled back
with Plunkett setting up Charlene
Schramm for a long shot into the net.
The Wingham offence was too much
for Blyth as they scored twice more
to take the win.
On Saturday the Howson
Hurricanes were in Seaforth for a
U14 Girls soccer tournament. Their
first match-up was against the
Wingham MMI. Wingham again got
off to an early scoring first in the
match. Lexi Smith was strong in the
Blyth net and shut Wingham out for
the rest of the game.
Finally, in the second half, Marion
Studhalter set up Nesbitt for a goal
to tie the match. Neither team could
break the tie so the game went to a
shootout. Nesbitt scored the only
Blyth goal in the shootout and
Wingham scored twice to record the
win.
The Hurricanes’ second game was
against the Clinton Fusion. Smith,
got a break in this game with far less
action around the Blyth net. Blyth
was up by one at the half with a goal
from Nesbitt with Plunkett and Sam
Purden assisting. The Hurricanes
pulled away in the second half
scoring twice more. First Melissa
Van Schaik sent Nesbitt in for
another goal and then Delayna
Smith carried the ball in through two
defenders to score.
The last game of the playdowns
was against the Wingham Optimists.
It was a very tight game under the
extreme heat of the afternoon sun.
The Hurricanes went ahead early in
the second half to take the lead.
Schramm once again sent the ball up
to Nesbitt for the score. Smith did a
great job in the Blyth net again and
the Hurricanes’one goal was enough
for the win.
The Hurricanes finished the
playdowns in top spot and went on
to play the Seaforth Screaming
Eagles in the final match. It was a
hard-fought match with neither team
giving an inch, leaving the game tied
at the half.
The Eagles scored early in the
second half to take the lead, but the
Hurricanes got a break with a
penalty shot being called on
Seaforth. Van Schaik blasted one
past the Seaforth goalie to tie the
game. Seaforth regrouped and came
back to score and take the lead.
With time running out, the
Hurricanes kept Seaforth tied up in
their own end but missed the mark
on several shots. Seaforth took the
win. The Howson Hurricanes
finished the tournament in second
spot.
