Well the school days have all been
numbered, just ask any child and the
answer comes in numbers, all in the
single digits followed with a smile.
The plans and dreams for the
summer are just waiting for some
action. Enjoy this special time with
all your favourite young ones.
Ralph and I spent two great weeks
in Newfoundland. What a glorious
spot. Water and trees at every glance,
mountains of various vintage allmuch older than the Rockies toadmire. Being an island, itsuniqueness makes it a specialprovince.Only 14 animals are native and thewind and cold keep the survival ofthe fittest theory in check with them.Only the moose that was introducedin the 1900s (six taken to
Newfoundland by boat) are now
considered a problem. The puffin,
the provincial bird is a smart wee
thing and knows to roost in the spots
near, but untouched by people. They
choose rock isolated by water, that
has been separated by time to call
home. Puffins nest in the ground, in
colonies and pop out ready to dive
into the ocean for their meal. They’re
fun to watch as they land like
helicopters, but if dinner is the
aim, they’re like torpedoes into the
ocean. The geology, evident in the rockall around, reminds you of the iceages and the effect on the landscapeand it certainly makes for interestingwalks. The Atlantic in all itssplendor makes the cliffs even moredramatic. People have been living inNewfoundland, documented, sincethe 1500s.
Fishing and history are well
remembered in museums and
restored buildings for others to learn.
St. John is a good introduction to the
province with the art gallery, the
archives and the museum all in a
new building called, The Rooms, in
honour of the cod processing history.
In the Johnston GEO Centre, you
take an elevator down into the rock
to understand the geology of the
province. Fascinating.
Like any nice vacation, you really
have to see it to understand, muchlike life. The community was well fed onSunday as the Brussels firefightersput on their aprons to show us theirskill as cooks. We know they aregood for our safety and so we appreciate their other skills aswell. My mind is on Cathy Goetz this
morning. She used to guard the ball
park. Her mom died suddenly last
week, leaving a bit spot missing in
the lives of her family as well as the
United Church in Huron and
Perth and the Belgrave community.
Gloria Dow was an example of
calm, clear, quiet competence.
This is one of those times tat only
time and nature will help. We’re
thinking of you Cathy and Brian, let
the trees and the Maitland help you
remember what a neat mom you
enjoyed.
I missed the airplanes overhead
this weekend. It didn’t seem right.
Father’s Day, Firefighters’ breakfast
and no Armstrong Aerodome action
to enjoy. The fly-in has gone on for
20 years, we’ll enjoy the memory of
all that air action. Thanks Jim, Leona
and family.
Don’t miss the following eventscoming up at the Brussels Library:TD Summer Reading Club, for ages4 to 12 on Tuesdays at 2:30 p.m.;The Snake Lady, for ages four andup, Tuesday, July 13 at 1:30 p.m.Admission is free.Bye now, Betty G.W.
Mark Breckenridge, owner and
operator of Hac ‘n Wac Metalworks
near Bluevale, brought home first
place from the Kingsbrae Garden
Sculpture competition.
Breckenridge’s submission, a
detailed eagle with a six-foot-
wingspan perched on a rock, took
him hours to produce.
The competition, held in Saint
Andrews, New Brunswick,
stipulated that they keep first and
second place entries to be displayed
in their garden, which Breckenridge
is happy about.
“The prize money is good, so I’m
happy with it being there,” he said in
a phone interview with The
Citizen.
Breckenridge said he would be
applying to compete in next year’s
competition again.

The Brussels Legion Branch was
very quiet this past week, but this
week will be different with the
banquets on the agenda.
Sports highlights include two
Comrades taking part in zone golf
tournament. Comrades Bob
Richardson and Eric Ross travelled
to the Woodlands Links in Clinton
and were pleased to finish in sixth
position. They will advance to
district competition in July.
Congrats to the guys.
It was the district track and field
competition in Kitchener on
Saturday and the Brussels Branch
had six athletes participating.
Athletes sponsored by the Branch
included Tyler, Lanie and Jenna
Smith, Kristen Pipe, Adam Cousins
and Alyssa Bragan. The group did
very well, earning four first-place
finished in their respective age
groups. Kristen Pipe placed fifth in
long jump and eighth in the 100-
metre dash. Alyssa Bragan finished
third in the long jump and fourth in
the 100-metre dash. Jenna Smith
placed first in the shot put and
second in the discus.
Participants in the younger
division do not advance to provincial
competition, but congratulations to
the three young ladies for a job well
done.
The older group of three athletes
also did very well. Lanie Smith
placed second in the long jump and
fourth in the 100-metre dash. Adam
Cousins placed first in the high
jump, first in discus and third in
javelin. Tyler Smith placed first in
high jump, fourth in long jump, third
in shot put and third in 100-metre
dash all in their respective divisions.
All three of these athletes will
advance to provincial competition in
Timmins on July 9 and 10. Congrats
to these talented young people.
The fish fry crew was off to cook
for the Mitchell Branch’s annual
Elimination Draw on Saturday night.
Cooking up the fare for the 125
diners was Lisa Glanville, Jason and
LeeAnn Konarski and Catrina
Josling. Good job Comrades.
