HomeMy WebLinkAboutThe Citizen, 2010-06-17, Page 16PAGE 16. THE CITIZEN, THURSDAY, JUNE 17, 2010.yourself? That’s when we’retempted to seek the “quick fix”hormonally, a rush of adrenaline bythe wrong source.Probably the best help in fighting
lust is an accountability partner we
trust and respect to whom we’ve
given permission to ask us the hard
questions. A real ‘buddy’ in Christ
who cares for us and may have a
sixth sense when the tempter’s
trying us. The Lord’s brother James
wrote (5:16): “...confess your sins to
each other and pray for each other so
that you may be healed.” Church
should be a place where we find
partners-in-spirit we can share our
struggles with, admit when we’ve
blown it, repent, and help each other
get back on our feet and fight again. The consequences of not fightinglust can be dreadful. Jesus warned inthe Sermon on the Mount, “But I tellyou that anyone who looks at awoman lustfully has already
committed adultery with her in his
heart. If your right eye causes you to
sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It
is better for you to lose one part of
your body than for your whole body
to be thrown into hell.” (Mt 5:28f)
Doesn’t that sound rather drastic?
You know He wasn’t meaning it
literally because you would still be
lusting with the left eye even after
gouging out the right eye. But He’s
warning, “Take sin that seriously!”
What are some practical
suggestions that can help us fight
lust - to swim upstream against thetide that would engulf us? A simplething is the eye-bounce - learning toquickly re-direct your eyeswhenever something appears thatcould cause you to lust. John Regier
recommends keeping a 3x5 index
card in your pocket on which you’ve
written some of God’s promises
about this, and your commitment to
fight to stay pure as His dearly-loved
child. Then when temptation strikes
you’ve got about three seconds to
reach into your pocket and quickly
re-direct your attention. Use God’s
promises to fight this soul war.
Remember what Peter said: “His
divine power has given us
everything we need for life and
godliness through our knowledge of
him who called us by his own gloryand goodness. Through these he hasgiven us his very great and preciouspromises, so that through them youmay participate in the divine natureand escape the corruption in the
world caused by evil desires.” (2Pe
1:3f) God’s promises are your
lifeline!
Don’t forget earthly helps such as
PluggedIn.com which has Christian
ratings and details about movies.
IMDB.org has useful information,
especially in the ‘parental advisory’
section. On the internet, Mozilla
Firefox and Adblock Plus can be
used in tandem to eliminate
distracting ads. xxxchurch.com
offers three types of
accountability/filtering software,
including x3watch, a free programthat sends a list of questionable sitesyou’ve visited each month (say) toan accountability partner youchoose. Don’t forget to place yourmonitor where passersby can see at
any time where you’re browsing.
Jesus taught, “The eye is the lamp
of the body. If your eyes are good,
your whole body will be full of light.
But if your eyes are bad, your whole
body will be full of darkness. If then
the light within you is darkness, how
great is that darkness!” (Mt 6:22f)
May God help our eyes be ‘good’ in
this visually-stimulating world, so
we can experience the joy of His
light within - rather than the
dissipation and dissatisfaction of
darkness!

Integrity – doing what is right and
honourable – is the character
attribute being given consideration
at Hullett Central Public School in
June.
June is windup month at schools
and Hullett is no exception. Each
class will be planning special
activities to bring their year to a
close. Report cards go home on June
24 and the last official day of classes
is June 28 when the school will hold
a talent show.
The final spirit day will be held on
June 18. Pupils are encouraged to
dress for the theme “Summer Fun
Wear”. Grade 8 graduation
ceremonies take place June 23.
Principal Sean Allen is suggesting
that children and parents participate
in a reading program over the nine
weeks of holidays to better prepare
the children for September. A
reading log will go home with each
pupil and results will be tabulated
during the first month of classes.
The class with the most pages read
will win a pizza party. Sounds like
something grandparents might help
with as well.
At time of reporting, Hugh Millar
is still in hospital in Goderich. He
and Betty could surely use your
prayers and support.
Take Dad out for breakfast at the
Londesborough Community Hall on
Sunday. The Londesborough Lions
Club will be cooking up another of
their “Olde Tyme Country
Breakfasts” from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
On the occasion recorded in Luke,
Jesus had been invited to eat with
Pharisees. Perhaps He saw the meal
as a way to reconcile with them and
be accepted. During the meal, a
woman of questionable reputation
washed Christ’s feet with her tears
and dried them with her hair as a
means of having her sins forgiven.
The Pharisees were shocked and
rebuked Christ. He answered them
with a parable whose reasoning they
had to accept. Jesus acted discreetly
yet showed His love.
Atkinson recognizes that in
today’s changing world it is easier
for a Christian to show their love and
charity in discreet ways. Christians
have principles that can be
questioned by society. But those
conditions and circumstances of
today’s life make being a member of
the United Church and a Christian
ever more important. They must be a
beacon without being overly
evangelistic. Christ has given us His
example. The words of the hymn “I,
the Lord of Sea and Sky” were
appropriate to Don’s message
The UCW will gather for their
June meeting at 7:30 p.m. on
Monday, June 21.
United Church parishioners need to

On June 11, the Londesborough
Happy Gang Seniors held their
regular monthly euchre party at the
Londesborough Community Hall.
There were 14 1/2 tables of card
players that evening.
Marie and Diane took home first-
place money by tallying up 85
points. Ken and Thelma Prezscator
scored 77 points to take second
place and Clarence and Adeline
ended in third place with a score of
73.
There was a tie for most lone
hands played successfully with
couples Joanne and Dorothy and
Helen and Harry scoring six each.
The next card party will be July 9
