for ice time in North Huron
As a result of a previous council
request, the Wingham Ironmen
brought forward a fundraising
schedule for North Huron council.
The Ironmen executive,
represented by President Bill
McGrath, outlined a fundraising
schedule with a potential $70,000
final figure. The outline includes
events throughout the summer and
sponsorship opportunities
throughout the season.
The $70,000 would be more than
enough to cover the Ironmen’s
$9,000 entry fee, past bills and
future ice time requirements, but
McGrath warned council that these
are potential numbers.
“To give you a projection of actual
dollars is impossible,” McGrath
said. “I can’t say yes, we’re going to
pay it all off. I don’t know that.
We’re going to do the best we can
and it will be watched closely.
Big ticket items on the projected
revenue list includes the Ironfeast,
held on July 15, where the Ironmen
hope to raise $10,000 through ticket
sales and live and silent auctions,
$10,000 in sweater sponsors (40
sweaters at $250 each), $9,000 in
game sponsors (18 home games at
$500 each), $7,000 through general
admission and $8,000 through a
goal lottery.
McGrath said a lot of the
incoming funds for the year have to
do with playoffs.
“If [the Ironmen] go to the all-
Ontario finals, we’ll pay you
everything you ever want, which we
have done in the past,” he said.
“[The report] is a projection, that is
what every team hopes to do.”
McGrath said that, while
projected income is hard to gauge in
the hockey industry, their intent
is to stay at a positive cash flow this
year.
Councillor Alma Conn of
Wingham ward said that, while the
plans look good, taxpayers
shouldn’t be put in a position where
they may have to pay off the
Ironmen’s outstanding debts, and
that these debts should be cleared
before the Ironmen can step on the
ice.
“Other organizations are paying
for the ice as they play,” she said.
“As a taxpayer, I don’t think it is
proper for [North Huron] to extend
money to organizations when they
are taking us further into debt. The
taxpayers will have to bear that
burden.”
Conn also stated that it is unfair to
expect every taxpayer to be
responsible for something they may
not get any benefit from.
Councillor Archie MacGowan
suggested that, using the projected
income, North Huron staff sit down
with McGrath and prepare a full
budget, including forecasted
expenditures, to try and prepare a
schedule to “get [the Ironmen] back
on their feet.”
At a Committee of the Whole
meeting on June 14, council
approved contacting McGrath
stating that the team would need to
have both the payment schedule in
place and have funds prepared to
pay for their ice time prior to
stepping on to the ice, as per the
township’s policy.
Recreation Director Pat Newson
also stated that there is a tight
schedule for the Ironmen to make
their intent known as, within the
next two weeks, ice time will be
determined and any spots the
Ironmen claim will be difficult to fill
if the Ironmen aren’t fielding a team
this year.
Council also approved a request
from the Ironmen to have their co-ed
slow pitch ball tournament held on
July 2-4 officially named a
community festival.

The Wingham Golf and Curling
Club had a little bit of everything
thrown at it by the weatherman last
week, but still managed to have a
great week.
The Tuesday ladies enjoyed a
sunny day with 23 girls playing
their rounds throughout the day.
Mary Houghton and Maria Van
Kuelen were the winners of the
longest putts on holes four and
eight. The Wednesday senior men
had their day washed out by an all-
day rain. Many of the guys joined
the staff in the clubhouse for coffee.
After all, it was their day to play
golf. Just a reminder to the senior
men that Tuesday, June 22 will be
seniors morning next week due to a
tournament on Wednesday.
On Thursday, the weather just
kept getting better as the day
progressed as 48 golfers took in the
men’s night. The winners were
closest to the pin, Mike Logan;
longest putt, Ken Petrie and Dennis
Knox; longest drive, Seedy (Neil)
Beiman and hidden scores Bryon
Lachance, Aart DeVos and Doug
Reinhardt. Teeswater’s Dave
Gamble shot the low gross for the
night with a 39. The club also
hosted the PC party for meetings
throughout the day in the Casemore
Room at the club and their day
wrapped up with 100 of the
members enjoying a buffet in the
dining lounge.
On Saturday, the Wingham Golf
and Curling Club was pleased to
have the Godden family hold its
yearly golf and lunch day at the
club. The rain stopped just in time
for the group to enjoy the day.
On Sunday the club was glad to
help celebrate the 85th birthday of
Shirley Wharton.
Around 30 family members and
friends came together in the
dining lounge to share some stories
and some laughs on this special
day.
On Saturday, June 19, the club is
hosting the Doctor Recruiting
Tournament and on Wednesday,
June 23, the Women’s Shelter
Tournament.
The pro shop reports there is still
room in the Junior Clinic scheduled
to run July 5 - 9. Call the pro shop
for more details.

The Howson Hurricanes travelled
to Clinton last week to beat the
Clinton 1 team 5-2 in U14 girls
soccer action.
The Hurricanes were short several
players and needed to pull up some
players from the U12 team.
The Hurricanes got off to a good
start, scoring the first goal of the
match. Megan Hoggart worked the
ball up to Tiffany Conrad. Conrad
fired the ball into the back of the net.
Clinton kept Charlene Schramm
busy in the Blyth net and were able
to score one goal to tie the score.
Blyth went ahead with a goal from
Ariya Vellanga with Mackenzie
Nesbitt assisting. The Hurricanes
held the lead at the half.
Clinton responded quickly at the
start of the second half and scored
one to tie the game at two. The
Hurricanes came on strong late in
the game to score three times to put
Clinton away. First Nesbitt and
Vellanga teamed up once again with
Nesbitt scoring, then Hoggart made
no mistake on a penalty shot and
Shannon Dale scored the final
Hurricane goal.
The Hurricane defenders, Megan
Hoggart, McKayla Nonkes, Hillary
Schramm, Carlene Bremner,
Shannon Dale and Chantal Van
Schaik did a great job of fending off
the Clinton attackers to keep them
out of the Blyth end. A big thanks to
the U12 players Linnea Nonkes,
Chelsey Hoggart, Dawn Conrad,
Tiffany Conrad, Shannon Dale and
Chantal Van Schaik who all played
big part in the Hurricane’s victory.
