Brussels couple celebrates 65th wedding anniversary The million-dollar rain last week has given the crops just what they needed, and as usual, now as farmers we can hope that it stops for a little while. Some farmers still have white beans to plant, some spraying to do, hay to cut, etc. The family of Neil and Marie McGavin held a celebration and gathered at the home of Jeff and Shannon McGavin for a birthday celebration and they also had family pictures taken. The Kelso family (Heather) from North Bay stayed at the cottage in Bayfield and had a great time. They invited friends to stop over for a visit and they had company from 10 a.m. until 10 p.m. They reported a wonderful time catching up with many of their friends and their families. Neil Turnbull has been home from the west to catch up with his family and to look after business. He has been staying at the Walton Inn and has had a chance to visit with many Walton/Brussels area folks. Neil was here for a couple of weeks. The farm of Paul and Dianne McCallum was overrun with motorcycle enthusiasts on the weekend. The rain didn’t dampen the spirits of the bikers who congre- gated on Saturday morning and about 65 of them headed out about noon for their ride. They went to Neustadt where they stopped in for a break and then headed back to McCallums. Over 100 enjoyed a meal prepared by Ron Williamson crew and after costs, the monies were donated to Ronald McDonald House. Bikers came from all across the area, the farthest from Windsor and many stayed over for the weekend. A breakfast was provided in the morning by the “men” and everyone had a great time. Celebrating a milestone on the weekend were Charles and Shirley Shobbrook. The couple celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at the Walton Hall. The family of 19 enjoyed a meal and then friends, family and neighbours dropped in for a social evening. Congrats to the Shobbrooks. Linda and Sarah McDonald and Karin McDonald Calhoun were the hostesses for a bridal shower for our future daughter-in- law, Alicia Dick on Sunday. The shower was held at Karin’s home in Bayfield for the family rel- atives and bridesmaids of Alicia and Scott. The planned outdoors gather- ing was moved indoors because of the cooler temperatures on Sunday. The full house of guests enjoyed glasses of wine along with a varied selection of specialty cheeses, such as cranberry goat cheese, breads, fruits and vegetables trays. A lovely array of gifts was opened by Alicia and the group had a chance to view the gifts after Alicia thanked all who attend- ed. Did you get a chance to say good- bye to Don and Pat Nolan before they left for their new home in St. Thomas? If not, you’re in luck. Don and Pat will be the guests of honour at a farewell party at the Walton Hall on Saturday. We hope all Walton-area folks have a chance to drop in and have a visit. Don and Pat touched the lives of many Walton youth growing up, coaching baseball in the village for years. They lived in Walton for over 40 years and were involved in many of the special events hosted in Walton like Hay Days, donkey baseball and variety show entertainment. Drop in and say hello, revisit some special memories and wish them well. Donations to the North Huron Food Share would be gladly accepted as it was one of Pat’s pas- sions. Jody Semple, fiancée of Darryl Houston, was the star attraction at a bridal shower on the weekend. A crew of around 15 friends gathered at a cottage in Grand Bend for a full day of fun and laughter. Games, scavenger hunt, food and lots of stories was in store for the day. The girls had a great day and for those who stayed over, a great night. Duff’s United Church is under renovations in the kitchen area at this time. The new north wall and cupboards are in the construction process. Don’t forget that this Sunday is Duff’s Annual anniversary celebration Sunday. Church will be held at 10:30 a.m. Please invite your family to join us for service on Sunday. The Huron East budget included $185,000 for the purchase of a res- cue vehicle this year, meaning that the approved purchase will come in slightly under budget.Bedard said the truck is ready andwaiting, so the Brussels FireDepartment will have the truck in amatter of weeks after the purchasehas been authorized by council. The rescue truck that the BrusselsFire Department currently has isfrom 1973.Bedard said the exact same truck, but a 2010 model, would have costthe municipality approximately $15,000 more, calling his proposal agood deal. George and Marie Blake celebrat- ed their 65th wedding anniversary surrounded by friends, neighbours and family on June 5 at St. Ambrose Catholic Church in Brussels. The celebration, which followed the church service at St. Ambrose, was special twice over, with the anniversary being a milestone, and the pair celebrating their anniversary in the same church in which they married in 1945. Presided over by Reverend Father Paquette, the marriage brought together Marie Clara Deitner, daugh- ter of James and Cecilia Deitner of Grey Township and George Louis Blake Jr., son of George Sr. and Mary Blake, also of Grey Township. The couple have nine children; Gerald, Jim, Murray, Bob, Phil, Bruce, Anne Williamson, Joyce Williamson and Julie Wharton, 25 grandchildren, 32 great grandchil- dren, and one great great grand child.
