Health unit concerned over whooping cough casesThe Huron County Health Unithas confirmed three cases ofpertussis, or whooping cough, sinceApril. Pertussis is a contagious diseasecaused by a bacteria. Infants under
one year of age and women in the
last three weeks of pregnancy who
can transmit the illness to their
newborns are most vulnerable.
Pertussis can cause serious
complications and sometimes death
in infants less than six months ofage.Pertussis is spread through directcontact with respiratory secretionswhen an infected person talks, sneezes or coughs.
The Ontario Ministry of Health
has reported eight cases of pertussis
in 2010. In 2009 there were 391
cases identified in Ontario with no
cases reported in Huron.
Early symptoms of pertussis are
similar to the common cold: runnynose, mild fever and cough.Symptoms progress to include amore severe and frequent cough. This may be followed by gagging, vomiting or trouble breathing.
Sometimes after a coughing attack,
the child may give a loud “whoop”
when breathing in, which is why the
infection has been called “whooping
cough”. The “whooping” symptom
does not always occur.
Public Health Manager ChristinaTaylor says they are concernedabout the increase in cases andemphasizes the importance ofmaking sure you and your families’immunizations are up-to-date.
“Vaccination against pertussis
prevents most people from getting
pertussis and prevents severe
symptoms in those who do become
sick,” she said. Vaccination against
pertussis is included in routine
childhood immunizations and anadolescent booster. Children whohave been immunized may still getpertussis but the illness is lesssevere. Adults also get pertussis. They
experience persistent, continuous
episodes of severe coughing. An
adult may not develop as severe a
disease as children, but can still
spread the infection to children and
other adults.
The vaccine Adacel can be given
to adults to help booster their
immunity. Those who have children,
a grandchildren or work with young
children should talk to their
healthcare provider about the
vaccine.
Adacel is not publicly funded for
adults.
Taylor says it is critical to
recognize the symptoms early and
seek medical attention promptly to
help stop spread of the infection.
