Meeting three of the Wawanosh
Mighty Machines 4-H Club was
held on May 19 at 4:15 p.m. It was
held at F.E. Madill Secondary
School’s Tech Department.
Ellen Jefferson opened the
meeting with the pledge followed by
the roll call, which was, “Name an
engine part and its function.” Many
members answered with engine
parts they learned about last
meeting.
The guest leaders for this meeting
were Mr. Greidanus and Mr.
Armstrong, who are technology
teachers at F.E. Madill. First, Mr.
Greidanus compared four-stroke
engines to two-stroke engines. He
then discussed how important air
filters are in an engine. Next, he
explained how V8, V6 and V12
engines are set up. Members were
able to see how the pistons work on
a three-cycle engine which had
observation holes in its cylinder
wall.
Ellen Jefferson had brought her
2001 GMC truck in for an oil
change. While Mr. Armstrong and
Ellen put the truck on the hoist, Mr.
Greidanus showed the members the
different oil filter wrenches.
Members were given safety glasses
and they began examining the
underside of the truck. Mr.
Armstrong led the oil change
operation while members assisted.
Reba Jefferson unscrewed the oil
basin plug and Scott Jefferson took
the oil filter off.
While the truck was up on the
hoist, Mr. Greidanus taught the
members how to check tire pressure
and each member tried their hand at
it. After the oil was drained, the
truck was brought down and new oil
was poured in. Mr. Armstrong then
led the members through the
procedure of checking the air filter,
transmission oil, and making sure all
the lights worked. He told the
members what to look for in a
garage when you take a vehicle in
for an oil change. Stuart Higgins
checked the transmission oil level in
the truck. Jillian Martin then thanked
the guest speakers for their time and
informative lessons. The meeting
was closed by the motto.
The next meeting will be held on
June 7 from 7 - 9 p.m. at the Higgins
shed.

WI annual has spring theme
The sixth District Annual meeting
of the Huron Perth District Women’s
Institute was held at the Howick
Community Centre where everyone
was welcomed by Howick Branch
President Brenda Bunker. Brenda
also presented Marg Greig with a
wrist corsage from the Howick
members.
On each table there was a potted
container with lettuce growing as the
centrepiece.
Using the theme: In Spring
“Lettuce” Grow, President Marg
said, “let us” grow in our objectives
following the mission statement.
“Let us” be brave and move forward
to better things. “Let us” grow,
flourish and not be afraid to make
changes. She then had everyone
repeat the Mary Stewart Collect in
which the words, “Let us” are
repeated several times. It was
originally written as a prayer.
Helen Craig, Marjory Humphries
and Brenda Perrie from the Walton
branch conducted the In Memoriam
which included a solo by Margaret
McInroy accompanied by Marion
Godkin on the piano.
Margaret E. McMahon gave the
Board Director and Public Relations
reports. Arthena Hecker is the acting
president elect at Provincial Board
until January 2011. There is a list of
WI members who are willing to give
bed and breakfast to other members
and their travelling companions at a
nominal cost of $15 per night per
person. Sylvia Hatfield sent a letter
thanking everyone for their support
during the Haitian crisis, during
which six - 40' containers were sent.
Branches are asked to keep sending
in their ROSE session reports as they
are vital when forming partnerships
and applying for funding.
The FWIC Triennial Conference
is in Sidney, British Columbia June
2012. Provincial President Carol
Innes sent a letter asking the
members to get involved with a
letter-writing campaign to Premier
Dalton McGuinty’s government
concerning the impact of generic
drug reforms on rural pharmacies.
Barb Grube gave her ROSE report
and stated that there is going to be
another Ladies’ Night Out
November 4 at the Listowel
Agricultural Hall. The theme is
“Looking Into The Future”. The
branches have all had another busy
year with their programs.
Tweedsmuir curator Leone Foerter
said there are still 12 branches in the
District and the sheets with the
location of Branch Tweedsmuir
histories are being returned. Since
the countryside is changing very
rapidly each day, it is vitally
important to get the community
history written down before it is lost.
Beth Forest presented the Farm
Safety report and Marion Feldskov
the Advocacy report. Robina
Alexander from Maple Leaf branch
had some readings and gave the
members a chance to have a stretch
break before continuing the meeting.
Darlene Harding reported the
theme for the Country Heritage Park
is “Come to the Fair”. Huron Perth
District is going to present a school
display.
Eleanor Elg introduced Sabina
Kennema from the Greenway
Blooming Centre. Sabina and her
husband have a garden centre,
naturium and butterfly farm and
conservatory. She said that every
butterfly will go to a specific plant.
Plants can bring joy to any situation.
She demonstrated how to form an
outdoor partial sun to full sun
container using many varieties of
plants and grasses. The winner of the
lovely planter was Donna Lovie, a
guest from Huron South.
Reconvening for the afternoon
session, following a bountiful
potluck lunch, members were
entertained by Tara Green with her
“Earth Vibes Drumming”. Audience
members also took part with the
various instruments Tara had
brought with her.
The Huron County Rally will be at
Gorrie United Church on Monday,
Oct. 4 and Perth’s Rally at the
Atwood United Church on October
20. The ACWW Church service in
2011 will be held at the Brussels
Mennonite Church hosted by
Majestic and Walton branches.
President Marg Greig reviewed
the by-laws and Darlene Harding
conducted the installation of officers
for 2010-2011.
The seventh District Annual will
be on May 25, 2011 hosted by the
Gravelridge and Lily Dempsey
branches.
For the second time in less than a
week, the Friends of the Community
store in Clinton has been broken into
and had items stolen.
On the first occasion, the
suspect(s) stole the lawnmower that
belonged to the business. On the
night of May 25, the back door was
pushed open and the suspect(s) stole
a DeWalt 1.5 drywall drill and a
Sawzall. The value of the loss is
approximately $300.
Anyone with information on this
crime against a community-oriented
business is encouraged to call the

On Saturday, May 22 at Florence
Pullen’s house the group had its
second meeting of the year.
At the meeting they learned how
to make a harness. A harness is
important for controlling a sheep
when showing at the fair.
They learned how to judge in
theory as well as class of sheep. It
helps to check sheep for certain
things, but also educates on judging
at the fairs.
The group was also assigned a
certain breed of sheep to research.
